A total of 05,000 will be distributed in stake money, , an increase of ,000 over last year. The Leonard Richards Stakes and the Delaware Oaks, have among the nominees Olympia, Ocean Drive, Capot, Gaffery, Raise You, De Luxe and Slam Bang. Among those nominated for the three 5,000 stakes, the New Castle Sussex and Kent are Coaltown, Miss Request, Salmagundi, Better Self, Nearway, Phalanx, Mount Marcy, Swap Out and Rookwood. Racing Secretary J. Gilbert Haus is pleased with the response from horsemen, particularly because the two early-closing stakes, the Oaks and Richards, showed substantial increases over last year. The Richards is expected to be the richest race of the meeting and gross approximately 2,000, while the Oaks will be a close second and approximate 0,000. Comparing this years entries with 1948 when 1,114 were received, there is a decline of 45 nominations. This is due largely to the opening of the 80-day meeting in Detroit. Some Kentucky and mid-Western stables that nominated at Delaware are shipping to the Michigan oval and did not nominate to Delawares stakes.
