|BL *~*pBI JUDGES STAND *y CHARLES HATT0N CHURCHILL DOWNS. Lexington. Ky., May 11. — A good many Blue Grassonians are going to Detroit, for the opening of the Fair Grounds meet of 80 days on Friday. In fact, a good many Blue Grassonians are interested in the MRAs enterprises at the Motor City. Among those on the board of directors are Henry Knight. R. W. Mcllvain, Dale Shaffer. P. A. B. Widener III., Leslie Combs II. and Warren Wright. The new clubs roster of 30 stakes has attracted a classier lot of horses than Detroiters have seen in years. Its a pretty ambitious program for a track that drew average crowds of 12,000 and play of 25,000 over a period of 83 days a year ago. But Shaffer declares that, "We arent interested in associating ourselves with some highly commercialized, catch-penny type of racing." Some of those familiar with Detroit as a racing town wonder how the public will respond, for there is said to be an unusually large element of racegoers there to whom horses have no more identity than their program numbers. But everyone who cares about racings best interests hopes the MRA meets with the success it deserves, and we cant think the public anywhere is so indiscriminate it will fail to appreciate the sort of sport which the new club hopes to offer. AAA The Hard Boots also have some rooting interests in Fridays 0,000 Pimlico Oaks, what with Warren Wrights Wistful, H. P. Headleys Lithe and Royce Martins Tall Weeds and Lady Dorimar among the eligibles. You cant be sure so early in the spring, but we think that Wistful shall have to be considered when it comes time to award the bay leaves in this division. She is quite the stoutest of the fillies seen here in the Middle West. Mention of Hard Boots Attend Detroit Opening West Represented in Pimlico Oaks Eight Thirtys to Fore This Season Old Tom Prospect for The Lansing the Pimlico stake reminds us that Maryland was well represented here last week-end. and everyone seems pleased that Governor Lane vetoed the bills which would arbitrarily increase the number of racing days. Horsemen in the state include many who wish tracks would run off their full allotment of dates at one meet, rather than in split meets, which necessitates a great deal of vanning. But its doubtful if Pimlico, with its Preakness and Pimlico Futurity, would consider any such proposal. By the way, we learn Marlboro has a modern new stand this season. This course once handled 00,000 in a day with only two 0 mutuel windows. AAA In case you hadnt noticed. Rare Perfume won the Fashion the other day in :512/5, time within three-fifths of Algasirs world record. The Eight Thirtys are running this season, so that we suppose his yearling progeny will continue to be much in demand at the yearling auctions. Dinner Gong, Reveille and Vaudeville attracted attention to this sire in the winter. If it interests you, Rare Perfume is out of Fragrance, who is by the venerable Sir Gallahad III. In a way Eight Thirtys stud career has been a little like that of St. Germans, who also was something less than an immediate hit. His own sire, Pilate, is perennially there or thereabout in point of the number of winners sired and the number of races won. Eight Thirty in turn has several sons at stud, among them Colony Boy in Pennsylvania and Condiment in Tennessee. Friends who saw Rare Perfumes race tell us that we shall probably hear from her again, and she is liberally engaged in New York stakes. AAA Harry Trotsek. who makes rather a special-y of developing jockeys, has developed a clever colt in O. F. Woodwards dusky Old Tom. This son of Omission had to run the fastest Bashford Manor in seven years to win it. hanging out a minute flat for the five furlongs. He now enjoys somewhat the same anxious status of being "the best so far" that Ferd has on Long Island, and the handsome Quiz Show has in Maryland. But then Ky. Colonel and Olympia ran in the Bashford Manor a year ago, and these two kept on being good colts. Trotsek races at Detroit in the summer, and probably Old Tom will be pointed for the 0,000 added Lansing on Wednesday. May 18. This one is not unlike the Bashford Manor in that it is exclusively for two-year-old colts and geldings. We thought that Mrs. Denemarks colt, Curtice, ran well to finish second in the Downs race. He hasnt quite Old Toms zip out of the gate, but he has closed resolutely in each appearance. AAA Turf ana: Hirsch Jacobs compliments Pimlico on the mobile magnet which picks up all nails and other metal debris about the sheds. . . . Walter Haight now is a member of the Redland hunt, and is the only fox hunter we know who rides to hounds in a car. . . . You wouldnt think Charles Town could average 76,000 in conflict with Havre. . . . There will be no maximum weights in Detroit handicaps. . . . The Dale Shaffers were delighted with The Fat Ladys race in the Kentucky Oaks. . . . The master of Coldstream will attend the NARC meeting.
