Shako Shows Gameness To Register at Suffolk Annexes Exeter Purse by Head Over Lookout Dice After Duel SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 11. — Shako, from the barn of Bill Hinphy and ridden by the owners nephew, apprentice Patrick Boyle, displayed a game effort to annex the Exeter Purse at Suffolk Downs this afternoon before a crowd of 12,796. Shako finished a head in front of Lookout Studs Lookout Dice, who had no trouble saving the place award by two and a half lengths over Prisjoe Stables Orange Sun. Shako was the second favorite of the afternoon to score and paid .60, while timed the six furlongs in l:13Vs over a fast racing strip. Cold air, brought in from the nearby Atlantic Ocean by a brisk easterly wind, kept the patrons huddling on the vast apron in front of the grandstand and out of the shadows cast by the waning sun. In the Exeter, Lookout Dice was first to show in front as starter Bob Frend sent the field away from the barrier at the end of the backstretch. The six-year-old gelding was unable to maintain his advantage long as J. L. McKnights Curtain Time rushed past on the inside before they had traveled a furlong and by the time the first quarter mile was reached, Curtain Time had a length and one -half lead. Orange Sun and Shako were on even terms another length and a half back, but both running freely. Curtain Time continued to dominate the running as the field left the backstretch, but his foes were beginning their charge. Lookout Dice was the first to overtake the McKnight racer and drew alongside as the pair straightened for home. Meanwhile, Boyle had moved along the inner rail to attempt a move to the leaders, but they failed to change course and Shako was caught in close quarters with no place to go. The youngster appeared very cool and took his mount under steadying restraint until Curtain Time began to wilt, leaving the opening needed. Boyle roused the son of Head Play who responded gallantly and gradually edged up to and past Lookout Dice for the well-earned triumph.
