Pensive, Sire of Ponder, Succumbs at Calumet Hyperion Stallion, Himself, Won 44 Downs Classic and Preakness LEXINGTON, Ky., May 20.— Pensive, sire of this years Kentucky Derby winner, Ponder, died about midnight last night at Calumet Farm. The eight-year-old stallion was felled by meseneteric strangulations of the anterior portion of the small intestine. Dr. Arthur Davidson, the attending vet-erinai-ian, stayed with the well-known horse from early yesterday morning until the stallion finally succumbed late last night. Pensives oldest crop are three-year-olds of this year. Ponder was the only winner from that crop. He has one winner from his second crop, the filly Wondring, who is out of a full sister to Spy Song. Pensive was purchased in utero from A. B. Hancock, and* his dam, Penicuik H., is still on the farm. His brother, Hyperionion, died at North Wales in Virginia, after siring two crops of foals. Pensive raced for Calumet at two and three in 1943 and 1944, winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness for them. He was second in the Belmont, Chesapeake and Bowie Handicaps; third in the Classic and Champagne Stakes. He earned 67,-715 before being retired to the stud. The horse was not insured. He will be buried at Calumet.
