Wool lards Pet Romps Home in Easy Fashion Finishes Six Lengths Ahead of Vestibula at Detroit Course PAIR GROUNDS, Detroit, Mich., May 20. — Buckley and Locklears Woollards Pet, a mud-running son of Pictor and Adelia B., scampered to an easy triumph here today in the third race, one of the better attractions on an off-day program. Alertly handled by apprentice Norman Cartwright, who was completing a saddle double, Woollards Pet romped to the end of the six furlongs with a six-length advantage over N. Swansons Vestibula, second by a half length margin over Lamoureux and Peats Glider Pilot. Raymond Arikenbauers favored High Ego raced forwardly placed to the final furlong, then faltered and finished fourth in the field of six three-year-old entrants. Woollards Pet, third in his previous start at the Motor City course, found the muddy going to his liking and stepped the three-quarters mile in 1:14%. Second choice to High Ego in the speculation, the Buckley and Locklear gelding was held at 12 to 5. Taking command at the start of the sprint, Woollards Pet soon established a clear lead while High Ego raced in nearest pursuit of the ultimate victor in the initial five-eighths mile. During the stretch run, the winner drew away from his rivals without need of urging as Vestibula and Glider Pilot engaged in a sharp duel for second honors, the former gelding taking that portion of the purse by a short distance. Improved weather conditions prevailed in the Detroit area today and a crowd of some 10,000 witnessed the sport. The track was termed muddy for the earlier events on the card but it improved as the afternoon progressed, indicating that the footing may be fast for tomorrows half -holiday racing. United Nation, racing under the silks of Joseph Farrell, of Nashville, Tenn., scored a handy graduation triumph in the five-furlong opener, which matched eight two-year-olds. Cartwright and, finding the muddy going to her advantage, United Nation, a well-made daughter of Four Freedoms and Pompish, reached the wire two and one-half lengths before Mrs. E. E. Dale Shaffers Dogs Up, second by a length in advance of Arthur B. Hancocks Gay Melody. United Nation, who was bred at Del E. Holemans Pilot Knob Stud, completed her journey nover the sticky footing in 1:01%, and rewarded her few backers with straight pay-offs of 6.40. Novice riders competed in the six-furlong second race, and Albert Richard Bailey, of Jackson, Mich., enjoyed the thrill of handling his first winner, when he successfully piloted Charles Rufis Mintlock to a nose decision. M. H. VanBergs Sons Twinkle ran second, a length before Keystone Stables Gem o Miami, who was third in the small field" of six starters. Mintlock, aged son of Snaplock, raced the three-quarters mile in 1:16. The Rufi gelding was a 6-to-5 choice and, coupled with United Nation, victor in the first, returned 49.20 in the Daily Double.
