Loraine Drives to Creole Purse Tally With Apprentice W. Boland at Belmont Red Camelia Runner-Up to * Breckinridge Long Filly as Admired Is Faltering Fifth BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 23. — Loraine, a brown daughter of Challenger n., and Nasca, owned by Breckinridge Long, was returned. a driving winner of thg Creole Purse which was the best offering this afternoon. Ridden by apprentice Wiliam Boland she slipped through on the inside at the stretch turn and responding to pressure in the final sixteenth held her opposition safe. At the end of the mile and. one-sixteenth distance, Red Camelia, racing for Joe W. Byown was second while Russell A. Firestones Latest Vogue was third. The Creole Purse was fashioned for three-year-bid fillies and engaged some of the nominees for the more richly endowed Coaching Club American Oaks to be contested on Saturday. Seven started in the test and the disappointing favorite was Admired, owner by the Murlogg Farm and a recent arrival from Maryland. Partly clear skies and a drying out track prevailed for the afternoon and a turnstile count of 21,251 was on hand. ► ■ The junior misses -in the Creole Purse were well mannered in the starting stalls and left in good alignment. Flying Ship and Admired were the ones to show the way in the early running, while Latest Vogue, Plunder and Pella followed in that order with Red Camelia and Loraine bringing up the rear. Arcaro was content to follow the pace to the far turn and then - moved up to displace the Phipps representative. At the stretch turn Admired was beginning to show signs of faltering and despite a rousing by Arcaro continued to lose her advantage. Pella at this stage moved to the outside while Boland cut the corner with Loraine. Back of these came Red Camelia hugging the inner rail with Latest Vogue and Plunder close up. At the furlong pole Admired was through and there Loraine moved up along the rail to a length lead. However, she was steered slightly towards the outside when clear and drove home ahead of the Brown miss. Red Camelia bested Latest Vegue by a nose, the identical margin which separated the Firestone starter and Pell$ Six lengths back of this trio was the faltering" Admired while Plunder had no trouble in leading home Flying-Ship. The winner sped thediiance in 1:46% and returned a 2.90 mutuel. She is an Oaks eligible, as is Red Camelia.
