Rocky Mountain Area Breeders Start New Sales Organization First Sale Probably to Be Held at Denver or Colorado Springs; Conditions Later DENVER, Colo., May 23. — A group of breeders of thoroughbred horses in the Rocky Mountain area met in Denver recently for the purpose of organizing the Rocky Mountain Thoroughbred Sales Company, a non-profit organization for the purpose of sponsoring a thoroughbred sale at a centrally located point— probably Colorado Springs or Denver. Breeders will be permitted to consign stock to this sale subject to conditions to be announced in detail at a later date. The sale will probably be held this year in Colorado Springs, with the date tentatively set for Friday, September 2. Present plans call for an afternoon sale for thoroughbreds of all ages and an evening sale of yearlings. t Originators of this sale include the following thoroughbred breeders: NEW MEXICO — Howard Lackey of Raton and E. T. Springer of Cimarron. COLORADO— Bob Jones of Monument, Reginald Sinclair of Larkspur and Ned Grant of Denver. WYOMING — Kenneth Schiff er, Bill Gardiner and Amelia Forbes of Sheridan. MONTANA — Warren Brewster of Birney. The increased interest in horse racing in New Mexico, Wyoming and Montana during the past few years and the new racing program in Colorado is expected to stimulate interest in thoroughbred breeding in the entire Rocky Mountain area. At the present time, thoroughbred breeders have no standard outlet for their product in this area and prospective buyers have no established sale to attend closer than Kentucky or California. Breeders and buyers in the East have the Keeneland and Saratoga sales and there are many such sales on the West Coast. The distance to any of these sales makes it impractical for breeders and prospective buyers of the Rocky Mountain area to attend them. At the organization meeting in Denver on April 28, officers and directors chosen were Kenneth Schiff er, president; Bob Jones, vice-president; Howard Lackey, treasurer Wood Erwin, secretary and assistant treasurer; E. T. Springer, director; Reginal Sinclair, director; Ned Grant, director. A meeting of the board of directors will be held in Denver in June for the purpose of adopting by-laws and accepting additional members. Humphrey Finney of the Fasig-Tipton thoroughbred sales organization has been Finney is nationally known in this field of work and has agreed to help organize this program and to help conduct the sale, contacted and he is enthusiastic about the possibilities for the program of the Rocky Mountain Thoroughbred Sales Company.
