Tacaro Briar Earns His First Purse of Season Gains Nose Edge Oyer Ringneck Near Finish at Garden State Park GARDEN STATE PARK, Camden, N. J., May 23.— Having been put on edge with a recent local endeavor, R. L. Hall, Jr.s, Tacaro Briar this afternoon accomplished his initial victory of the season in the six-furlong Ardmore Purse, styled for 5,000 to 2,000 claimers. The six-year-old son of Neddie received a hustling ride from Jimmy Stout, the meetings leading rider, and took a nose decision from Ringneck, who raced for the partnership of Straus and Gillis. Just one length off the top pair came Jerry McCarthy Stables Cherish, with Rarco Stables Darby dAmour just a neck farther back. The winner was second choice to the unplaced Normrich, and paid .40. Partly cloudy weather prevailed and a crowd of approximately 11,500 was on hand. Early calculations developed as expected, with Darby dAmour and Normrich, the latter claimed by Palatine Stable recently for 0,000, vying for the lead. For more than a half mile the Rarco racer proved the speedier, but the tactics employed proved unwise and both speedsters faded in the final stages. When the pacemakers folded, Ringneck was right on hand to wrest command, but he was unable to draw clear, as stout sent up Tacaro Brior to join him. Cherish, too, was commencing a rally, but the game mare was forced to take the overland route, which may have cost her the race. The stretch drive was a spirited affair, with Stout using his whip unsparingly to gain the advantage nearing the wire. Ringneck, however, failed to concede defeat and gave battle to the final stride. Cherish was beaten but a length for all the money as Darby dAmour and Normrich dropped back to finish fourth and sixth, respectively.
