Goodwins homebred colt. Papa Redbird, flashing the same high speed that earned him major honors in the Curtain Up Handicap, local inaugural feature, scored a handy triumph today in the featured Oakwood Purse. Confidently ridden by jockey Willie Cook, Papa Redbird. was not under strong pressure in the late stages to beat Mrs. E. E. Dale Shaffers Miss Mommy by a length margin at the end of the six furlongs. Two and one half lengths farther back, Hal Price Headleys Plumper and Mrs. Lottie Wolfs Childeric finished in a deadheat for the minor end of the purse. Shouldering 124 pounds, topweight under the allowance conditions of the Oak-wood, Papa Redbird, a four-year-old son of Balladier and Taj Bibi, foaled at his owners Patchen Wilkes Farm, stepped the three-quarters mile over the slow track in 1:14 and then worked out to the mile in 1:41%. One of. several favorites to reach the winners ring during the matinee, Papa Redbird returned his many backers odds of 1 to 2 after capturing his second purse here in as many starts. Takes Command Quickly Papa Redbird sprinted into command soon after the break and established a clear lead of three lengths before passing the initial quarter mile marker while Plumper, Crack Reward and Miss Mommy followed in nearest pursuit and in that order. Papa Redbird continued to show the way to the stretch and, after he had shaken off : Plumper, was not under strong pressure during the last three-sixteenths to withstand a game but futile bid by Miss Mommy. Plumper was unable to seriously menace the flying leaders but the Headley homebred did hold on willingly enough to share the show award with Childeric, who came from well back during the drive. Partly cludy weather and a slow track greeted the more than 10,000 turf followers that turned out today for the formful Fair Grounds sport.
