Ben Jones Emphasizes Thai Citation Definitely Will Start at Arlington Park I Says Entire Calumet String | Is in Fine Shape; Eyeing First Three Stakes of Meeting ARLINGTON PARK, Arlington Heights, 111., June 4. — "Theres nothing wrong with Citation. Hell definitely start here. If he had been a cheap horse, he would have been back to the -races long ago, but we didnt want to take a chance forcing him." The speaker was Ben A. Jones, general manager of Calumet Farm string, which has part of its stable quartered here. The others are now at Belmont Park and will be shipped here immediately after the closing of Belmont Park next Saturday. "We fired Citation for osselets during the winter," Jones continued, "and hes just been a little slow coming back to top form. "Our stable is in good shape and we hope to be represented in every stake carded here this season. Our two-year-olds are well along this season. They coughed in Florida just like our crop did last season but they got over it early and well be able to run something in the Hyde Paik Stakes on opening day." Jones arrived here this week from Churchill Downs with 23 horses. By opening day, June 20, there will be more than 40 head housed under the Calumet shed, including such celebrated performers as Citation, Coaltown, Ponder. Bewitch, Fervent, Faultless, Armed and Free America. The veteran trainer indicated that Re-Armed would be the most probable choice to carry the Calumet colors in the Hyde Park. In the first start of his career, on Memorial Day at Belmont Park, this full brother to Armed went to the post at odds of 7 to 10 and won a five-furlong dash in :58% over the Widener straightaway. Re-Armeds objectives will include the Arlington and Washington Park Futurities, each of which will gross approximately 5,000. Calumet has 10 colts and two fillies among the nominees for the two futurities, and Jones says they will all be ready to run in the course of the summer. Among the juvenile fillies particularly well along in training is Duchess Peg, a daughter of Whirlaway and Some Pomp. She is in both the Lassie and Princess Pat. With the Hyde Park scheduled for opening day, the Princess Doreen Stakes for Wednesday of the first week and the Equipoise Mile for the first Saturday of the Arlington Park meeting, Calumet is ready for a flying start. After Re-Armed and possibly a stablemate go in the . Hyde Park. Warren Wrights establishment will be ready to follow up with Wistful in the Princess Doreen, a race for three -year-old fillies. Wistful has won the Kentucky Oaks, the Pimlico Oaks and the Coaching Club Continued oi Page Thirty-Nine j 1 Citation Definitely Will Start At Arlington, Ben Jones States Continued from Page One American Oaks already this season. Then in the Equipoise Mile, Calumet will be ready to shoot with Coaltown. Coaltown, who demonstrated such blazing speed last season, already has won four stakes this year — the McLennan Handicap and the Widener Handicap at Hialeah, the Burke Handicap at Havre de Grace and the Gallant Fox Handicap at Jamaica. "Hell be better this season," Jones remarked. "He wasnt feeling well when we brought him here last year. He had begun to tail off even before we left New York — and that throat trouble was still bothering him. Hes in good condition now." Ponder, the Kentucky Derby winner, will be aiming at the Arlington Classic and the "American Derby. Calumet Farm has led the nations stables on a basis of earnings during six out of the last eight years. Last year, when it again topped the national standing with ,269,710, Calumet won nine stakes here.
