Motor City to Lure Good Field to Post Johns Joy, Blue Lancer, Lextown, Halt Eligible to Detroit Week-End Feature FAIR GROUNDS, Detroit, Mich., June 4. — The Michigan Racing Association, which has presented several outstanding stake attractions thus far in its 1949 season, is to stage another pair of added-money features during the week. The 0,000 Motor City, an allowance event for three-year-olds at one mile and one-sixteenth, drew 17 sophomore nominees and it will headline the sport at the local oval next Saturday, June 11. On Wednesday, the 0,000 Powder Puff, a five-furlong dash for two-year-old fillies, is to occupy the spotlight, "and 27 junior misses are named for the mid-week feature. Heading the probable starting band for the Motor City are Woodvale Farms Halt, John Kinards Johns Joy, Lexbrook Stables Lextown, John Marschs OP Skipper, Mrs. E. E. Dale Shaffers crack filly, The Fat Lady, and the Canadian invader Arise, a member of the Addison Stable. Others eligible for the week-end stake are Louis Lee Haggin n.s Smasher, Hal Price Head-leys Pella, Shakeme and Yes You; Kinard Stables Montes Pride, D. Hess Blue Lancer, Sylvester W. Labrots Taran, Peter A. Markeys Anthracite, Charles Rufis Blue Grip, White and Thomas Our Request, and O. Frank Woodwards Kosadus, a recent visitor to the local winners ring. Considerable interest is attached to the return meeting of Halt and Johns Joy, for this pair put on a stirring duel at the Keeneland meeting in the. Blue Grass Stakes. The Woodvale Farm colt, with Conn McCreary in the saddle, beat but Johns Joy, ridden by Johnny Longden, by a scant nose at the end of the nine-furlong Lexington fixture after a bitterly waged stretch battle. Conceded Weight to Rivals Beaten in the Kentucky Derby after a rather rough journey, Johns Joy has been under silks but once since the Downs classic, and he finished third in the six-furlong Frontier Stakes to Yes You and Arise after he had led his rivals for the major portion of the sprint distance. It is to be remembered that the Kinard colt, brilliant son of Bull Dog and My Auntie, conceded nine pounds to each of his Frontier conquerors. While Halt and Johns Joy are highly-regarded contenders for Motor City honors, Lextown, who is to be shipped here from Washington Park for the week-end head-liner, undoubtedly will receive strong backing. Turning in a sparkling effort in the Peabody Memorial at the Chicago course, Lextown raced a good field into submission in that one mile and one-quarter event and the colt presently is in peak form, accord-ingto advices from trainer David Hum. One of the real threats in the Motor City is Blue Lancer, a handsome bay son of Blue Swords and Oconee, who won his first start as a juvenile and then came to the races this year to take top honors in four of six engagements. Blue Lancer beat a crack field in the six-furlong Farrell Handicap at Bowie on March 30 and he also achieved a smart triumph in the seven-furlong Swift Stakes at Belmont Park on May 7. The Powder Puff is quite likely to result in one of the better juvenile offerings of the current Michigan season for included in the list of eligibles are such fleet youngsters as James C. Ellis homebred Aunt Jayne Z., winner of the Debutante Stakes at Louisville, Charlton Clays Carmen, Buckley and Locklears undefeated Linda Jane, Grant A. Dorlands homebred Jacopo filly, Brown Brocade, and the Dixiana pair, Wondring and Heres Hoping. The latter Fisher entry each won at the first asking here and trainer Jack C. Hodgins, of the locally-owned Dixiana establishment, has high hopes for the fillies. Mondays program at the Fair Grounds will feature the Forty Niner Purse, at one mile and 70 yards for four-year-olds and older. Heading the small field of five middle-distance performers entered for the main attraction is Love Sonnet, who races under the silks of the late C. S. Popovitz. Love Sonnet gave a splendid account of himself to finish second behind Dixianas Shy Guy in the Col. F. M. Alger Memorial Handicap. Hal Price Headleys Catsmeow is expected to go well in the Forty Niner, while E. P. Taylors Windfields, Mrs. Lottie Wolfs Childeric, and Theodore D. Buhls Crack Reward also are named for the Monday test.
