Announce Stakes Dates For Next Suffolk Meeting 0,000 Massachusetts Will Be Decided Closing Day, August 13 SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., June 4. — William Almy, Jr., director of racing at Suffolk Downs, today announced the stakes schedule to be run at the summer meeting of the East Boston track which will operate from July 11 through August 13. The traditional Massachusetts Handicap, which carries an added value of 0,000, tops the agerida of the five features to be offered. In addition to the Massachusetts which will be run on closing day, the operators of Suffolk Downs have scheduled the Betsy Ross Stakes for two-year-old fillies at five and one-half furlongs to be run on July 16 for an added value of ,500. The Hannah Dustin Handicap for fillies and mares, three-year-olds and upward at one mile and a sixteenth to be run on July 23, for 0,000 added. The Miles Standish Stakes for two-year-old colts and geldings at five and a half furlongs to be run on July 30, carrying an added value of ,500 and the Mayflower Stakes for two-year-olds at six furlongs on August 6. The Mayflower is for a purse of 0,000 added. The mile and a quarter Massachusetts Handicap will be offered for the fifteenth time, which over the years has been won by such handicap -stars as Seabiscuit, Fighting Fox, Eight Thirty, War Relic, Whirlaway, Market Wise, First Fiddle and Stymie. Following the slight descent in the trend of racing this year, 5,000 has been shaded from the values of the Suffolk stakes, in comparison with the same roster that was offered during 1948. Only the Massachusetts which is the richest race run in New England was kept at the previous level. Closing dates for all five summer meeting stakes will be July 1.
