Glen Arvis, Bridal Shower Take Down Divisions of Polly Drummond Stakes Both Sections Are Roughly 4 Run; Odds-On Bed o Roses Is Unfortunate in Second Half DELAWARE PARK, Stanton, Del., June 4. — The Polly Drummond Stakes, for juvenile fillies at the five-furlong distance, was staged in two divisions here this afternoon and the runnings resembled free-for-all battles, as Bobanet Stables Glen Arvis and William G. Helis Bridal Shower won their respective sections. The victory of Bridal Shower was accomplished at the direct expense of Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilts Bed o Roses, and brought gloom to the supporters of the latter, for she had been backed down to less than l-to-2 by the form players in the crowd of approximately 22,000. Bridal Showers margin of victory at the end was just short of two lengths, as Jimmy Stout hustled the Beau Pere lassie the five furlongs in :58%. Bed o Roses was eight lengths clear of Janet N. Kellys Jaleen. The Helis lassie paid 2 as the second choice in the field of nine. Johnny Gilbert, who was the victim of bad racing luck throughout the second division, enjoyed better fortune in the first half of the stake, as Bbbanets Glen Arvis was victorious by a half length. Pentagon Stables Chloe was second, two lengths in advance of Walter M. Jeffords My Rose. Bridal Shower, breaking from the rail position, retained the inside in the running as she outsped her opposition. Bed o Roses, winner of the National Stallion StakesXQr fillies, and the Ran.cacas .Stakes in" her last two appearances ahcl probably; ► best this afternoon, didnt have a chance to demonstrate her top speed. After being shuffled back early, Bed o Roses was steadied on the turn and, while trying to move through in the early stretch, the Vanderbilt miss was again taken up when Bridal Shower was sent in after her. When sent to the center of the track, Bed o Roses had too much taken out of her and failed to make up ground in the late stages. The second division had only nine starters, which accounted for the winners share being only ;650. The first division was a roughly run dash, and the victory of Glen Arvis was more or less a case of survival of the fittest. Gilbert turned in Ms usual clever saddle performance, keeping bis mount along the inside and clear of trouble, then putting on a splendid hustling exhibition to have the Attention filly home a half length clear of the eleven-to-ten choice, Chloe. My Rose again was forced to pick her way between horses and, as in her previous race, gave an indication that she will show to better advantage when the distances are stretched out a bit. * The victory of Glen Arvis was the second for Bruce Livies Bobanet establishment, for the colors were victorious when Lovely Imp was moved into first money in a division of the 1946 running through the disqualification of Glen Riddle Farms Ellen-dale. Glen Arvis share of the purse was ,800 and paid 7.60. * .
