Ben H. Buck1 Weaver, Turf Writer, Succumbs Louisville Scribe Was Familiar Figure at Each Running of Derby LOUISVILLE, Ky., June 4.— Ben H. "Buck Weaver, 48, well known turf expert and columnist of the Louisville Times, died at his home here Friday night. Weaver underwent an operation on April 6 after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage while working at his desk in the Times office. He rallied after the operation and witnessed the Kentucky Derby running, which he had seen annually from 1917, via television. He later was returned to his home. Weaver entered the newspaper field in 1921 with the old Louisville Herald and when that paper merged with the Louisville Post he remained with the newspaper until September, 1926, when he became associated with the Times. Although he devoted most of his time to writing racing items and making selections, Weaver had a knack of selecting winners of boxing and wrestling combats. He also did right well in choosing winners of football and basketball contests. A lovable character, and quite heavy on his underpinning, this son of a minister came up through sports and Vernon Screw Sanders brought him to the race tracks. When the former Ghent, Ken-tuckian decided to retire, Weaver took over. Weaver made many friends and his passing will be deeply felt. Weaver played a prominent part in the formation of the Kentucky Breeders Association and also formed the Kentucky Press Association. Only recently Lincoln Plaut of Triangle Publications, paid tribute to Weaver during a meeting of the Kentucky Breeders Association. His widow, Catherine, survives. FAIR GROUNDS, Detroit, Mich., June 4. — Members of the press, officials and turfmen at the local oval were saddened today when word was received of the death of Ben H. "Buck" Weaver, who for many years covered racing in Kentucky for the Louisville Times. Quite a group of Blue Grass state horsemen plan to journey to the Falls City for Weavers final rites.
