Going Away Big Upset in Yankee One Hitter Second In Suffolk Fixture Brookmeade Gelding Speeds Ten Furlongs in 2:02% to Win by Two and Half Lengths SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., June 4. — Going Away, sporting the silks of Mrs. Dodge Sloanes Brookmeade Stable, annexed the fourteenth running of the Yankee Handicap by two and one-half lengths over Greentree Stables One Hitter before 24,130 patrons who flocked to Suffolk Downs „ this afternoon. Mort Stuarts Best Doings finished third, another two lengths back and a head before Woodvale Farms Halt. With Joe Renick in the saddle, Going Away earned 6,025 of the gross purse of 3,600. The gelded son of Whirlaway— Royal Venture traveled the mile and one quarter in 2:04%, which is the fastest time turned in for the Yankee, but two and one-fifths seconds off the track record established by Beauchef, last years Massachusetts Handicap winner. At the start of the Yankee in the chute at the head of the stretch, the field came! out on the main track in almost perfect alignment. Best Doings stumbled slightly j but George Hettinger quickly picked up the Stuart colt and had him alongside of the field. Seldom has 10 thoroughbreds ever come to the furlong mile strung across the track as was the case today. Sneak on Rail Darrell Madden, astride Marlet Stables Sneak, had the rail as the field passed the stands the first time around, but the majority of the riders were taking back not caring to establish the pace. Hettinger moved on the extreme outside with Best Doings and assumed the lead before straightening for the run down the back-stretch. Sneak followed along close behind and still along the rail. Madden hit Sneak twice as they neared the far turn, but Best Doings was ready for the challenge and, as the rider urged, the son of Best Seller started to draw away. As he opened the gap, One Hitter and Going Away drove at Best Doings and then the battle was on. Best Doings and Sneak tired after the rapid pace of six furlongs in 1:13 and the mile in 1:38. Halt was the disappointment in the Yankee. The home-bred son of Haltal was close to the pace in the early running but Conn McCreary elected to keep Halt under stout restraint to the final quarter, but the Woodvale colt failed to display the rally needed to carry him menacingly near the winner. The Yankee was run under perfect weather conditions. Going Away was overlooked in the wagering and returned a tidy 8.60 for his second victory of the year and by far the most important.
