SHIRLSON drove through on the inside to wrest a short command nearing the initial quarter mile, drew clear on the turns then drifted slightly wide and was displaced momentarily by JOLIRAB, but came again under strong handling and proved best JOLIRAB, under stiong restraint while blocked behind the first flight for three furlongs, came to the inside and through an opening to quickly move to the winner in the stretch, then hung LETS DANCE lacked early speed, then was taken wide for the stretch run and finished willingly. RECORD PLAYER was a keen contender while on the outside and weakened. CELLOPHANE was outrun. TOP ADMIRAL was alertly handled while vying for the pace from the beginning, disposed of PREPARED to open a commanding lead entering the stretch, I then lasted in handy fashion. MASTER MIND saved ground while improving position from a slow beginning and finished determinedly. BULL was under pressure while a forward factor, lost a little ground on the stretch turn then finished well. PREPARED began fast, could not outsprint the winner and quit after a half mile MIRTH-MAKER began sluggishly. ANDY HANDY tired. GAMBLER quit early. BLAZING raced on the outside while gradually reaching closer contention, then closed resolutely under strong hand urging in the last staqes and wore down YES YOU at the end. The latter went to the front early, drew clear under urging on the far turn and held sway evenly into the last furlong, then weakened only slightly and just missed. LUCKY HARP lacked early speed, then closed intermittently from the outside in the drive and finished fastest of all POLLYS DELAY was taken back momentarily on the far turn, made a mild bid on the stretch turn and then weakened. ENNOBLED, under pressure from the start, wrested command from WHIFFENPOOF after five furlongs, then closely followed the rail while drawing out to a long lead under steady urging. WHIFFENPOOF was only mildly urged to retain the lead for a half mile, then failed" to respond when set down to meet the winners challenge, weakened, but lasted to be easily best of the others. LARRY A. saved ground and bested tiring horses. THWARTED was undei intermittent pressure, never was a factor and tired. KINSMAN was well placed and in hand, but faltered when put to pressure. RISK A WHIRL, well ridden and lightly steadied early, steadily improved position while saving ground on the turns, then came through an opening on the inside of the leaders in the final furlong and closed strongly to win going away. CHLOE, never far back, was brought to the inside at the head of the stretch and made a strong bid which carried her to the front between calls, then could not stave off the winer, hung and just bested WINSHIP. The latter was rapidly sent up on the inside to reach a short lead entering the stretch, drifted slightly wide and weakened. DANGER AHEAD was a keen factor throughout, but failed to respond for the last stages. DARK FAVORITE, taken to the outside when unable to outsprint MISS DEGREE, was carried out in the final run and weakened. GROWING UP, sluggish at the start, was brought to the extreme outside steadily while improving position and was closing in evenly at the end. DRIFTING MAID failed to respond for the drive. MISS DEGREE opened a clear lead on the turns, but quit suddenly in the final furlong. ON was outrun. LEADING HOME was through early. Overweight— Winship, 1 pound; Miss Degree. 2 pounds. SPIDER ROCK, outrun for a half mile, gradually picked up speed thereafter and, coming between horses in the drive, closed strongly to win clear of opposition. CHERRY PATH was in hand while forcing the pace, willingly opened a commanding lead when urged, but weakened near the end. BIR ACKEIM was taken under light restraint when unable to reach the front early, came to the outside for the drive and finished determinedly PONTALBA set the pace to the stretch turn, could not hold CHERRY PATH, but then held on well. FREE PRESS raced outside horses and lacked a rally. PENNON tired. ALAIRNE was outrun. OMEN showed a dull effort. COYOTE quit badly DOBODURA, rank at the post, bore cut badly and was pulled up on the first turn. Pontalba claimed by F. A. Piarulli. Attendance, 24,684; Total Mutuel Pool, ,871,798.
