JUDGES STAND fiy charles hatton DETROIT, Mich., May 30.— Dick Connell and Horace Wade already are making plans for the summer meet at neighboring Hazel Park, which follows the Michigan Racing Associations 56 days with 56 more beginning on August 3 and extending through October 6. More than 200 horses horses now now are are training training over over the the re- horses horses now now are are training training over over the the re- resurfaced five furlongs oval and applications have been received for 100 per cent more than the 900 that the track in "the Friendly City" can accommodate. These will be screened with a view of offering the public the best class of racing possible. Long races are popular on Hazels short course, as they are elsewhere, and Wade proposes to renew the two marathon series he introduced last season. Additionally, lie plans a- sort of takeoff on the old "winners preferred" races, and will offer a few features for winners-at-the-meeting during the last several weeks. Connell has a flair for showmanship and hopes to show his patrons Sickles Image again this season now that she has attained so much box office. Also that Eddie Arcaro and other nationally known jockeys will appear during the meeting. Racing at Hazel certainly has been a boon to residents of the pleasant little community of Hazel Park, just as Detroit has benefited the tax payers of Livonia. We learn from racing commissioner Fred Harris that Hazel Park received 74,197 as its share of the take at Dick Connells track last year, and that Detroit and the trotters contributed 49,358 to Livonias coffers. AAA American racing passed one crisis when the House Ways and Means Committee reconsidered a proposed amendment to the tax method on stables and studs. On the face of it this proposal would have reduced the operation of stables and studs to one-eighth of their present scope, and have created much unemployment. Another extremely critical situation now has developed in Florida, where a bill to prohibit the publication of any racing news except ,for entries and results awaits Gov. Fuller Warrens Outline Plans for Hazel Park Meeting Protest Discriminatory Florida Bill Withers Tribute to Trainers Ability Detroit Park Achieves Some New Highs consideration. Earl J. Moyer, chairman of the legislative cfmmittee of the National Association of State Racing Commissioners, has questioned whether or not this measure is constitutional, and quite correctly, we think, for it is a direct infringement upon the freedom of the press. Not to mention that a it is rank discrimination against racing, b it is shortsighted because this news is important to Floridas tourist trade, and -c it is buck-passing for the reason there now are ample laws to stamp out illegal wagering were they effectively enforced. The bill has brought a storm of protest from all quarters of the press. It would establish a very dangerous precedent. AAA The Belmont Stakes may help to clarify the confused three-year-old standings in the East, with the winners of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Withers Stakes all engaged in this mile and a half. Battlefields race in the Withers was a feather in Bert Mulhollands cap, and confounded those who said he wouldnt go across the street. Whether George Wideners short-striding colt will stay a classic route has yet to be answered, but he is bred stoutly enough, if a little incestuously to a temperamental line. Battlefield began to "be difficult last winter at Hialeah Park. As we remarked several columns ago, a change of scenery sometimes improves horses psychologically when they begin to sulk, and we understand that Mulholland has been shuttling Battlefield between Erdenheim Farm and the tracks. Several years ago Morris Dixon pursued this method with Polynesian, who was a very capable horse, but also behaved as if he might sulk. Polynesian was turned out near Philadelphia between works and races and went on to compile an excellent record. He is a popular young sire and should be a successful one, bred , to mares of free running families. We think that most breeders will agree temperament is a consideration of quite as much importance as soundness or pedigree in making up a breeding list. AAA Detroit has set some new highs for attendance and play during the early days of its meet, and presidents. E. Dale Shaffer tells us he finds the patronage most encouraging for the future. The increase in play the first four days was almost 50 per cent more than for the corresponding period last May. It is pretty remarkable considering the downtown Detroit streetcar and bus strike, which is an inconvenience to many in reaching track buses. There are some unsettled areas about Detroit just now, but none of it is available, and it is intended for new plants and residential sections. The auto industry is represented by two huge plants within sight of the stands, and future buildings will be in this vicinity. AAA Turf aha: Detroits James Collins tells us he owns Biddy Bid, pacemaker in the Kentucky Oaks, because he had a useful filly called Indian Lace from the same family years ago. "I noticed they were out of half-sisters when she came into the yearling sales ring and obtained her for 00," he observed. "Last year I bought her half-brother by Rhodes Scholar for ,500. He seems a good sort, too.". King Ranch plans to race a division of about 20 during Monmouth Park this season. . .Lonoke Flash broke another track record when he hung out :53% in the Copper Country.. Executive vice-president George Haggarty of the Michigan Racing Association will introduce his racing silks at this meeting. . .Distribution soars, but Top Flights 19,000 continues the record for a two-year-old, though it was established in 31. Her Acorn success was the easiest in any race this observer has covered, as she was trotting 70 yards beyond the finish .. Among the best bred Detroit campaigners is Pussy Willow, whos by Bull Dog from the mare Sweet Willow . . . Waterford sport was conducted in semi-privacy several days last week, but has shown an encouraging gain.
