Two Former Winners Named for Monmouth List of 49 Nominees Includes Greek Ship and Three Rings OCEANPORT, N. J., Jtme 9. — Two former winners of the 5,000 Monmouth Handicap, the 1949 hero, Three Rings, and last seasons speedy Greek Ship, are among 40 nominees to the 1951 renewal of the rich mile and a quarter race at Monmouth Park. A final tabulation of eligibles finds the cream of eastern thoroughbreds named for the July 28 showing. After scoring a rather handy victory two years ago in running time of 2:03%, Three Rings was unable to cope with Greek Ships 2:02% last summer, and retired in the stretch to be third as Hypocrite H. split the pair. Greek Ships win marked the first time since 1885 that a three-year-old had whipped older rivals, Richmond having turned that trick 65 years before. There are many other good runners among the candidates, however. William Veenemans Black George, en route from Kentucky, was a winner in the Blue Grass, defeating a good band in track-record time, while the~Brandywine Stables early speed artist, Cochise, sometimes goes to the front and stays there. He won the recent Grey Lag Handicap with unusual determination and also dead-heated in the Brandywine Cap at Delaware Park with Post Card. Other Prominent Candidates County Delight, one of the most improved distance runners in training; William G. Helis, Jx.s, Ennobled, George D. Wideners Lights Up, Gustave Rings Lone Eagle, C. V. Whitneys Mr. Trouble, William Jeffords Post Card and many other stars are nominees. Lights Up won the Lamplighter Handicap last year.- He likes the local strip and has attracted a legion of supporters with good recent races. The Monmouth Handicap, a carry-over from old Monmouth days, was revived when the sport returned to northern New Jersey in 1946, and has furnished a keen contest in each annual showing.
