Woodchuck Woodchuck Equipoise Equipoise Victor-One Victor; One Hitter Hitter Takes Takes Monmouth Monmouth BeatsCombatBoots By Length and Half Success Gives Greentree Its Second Stake Wiruof Week at Track; County Delight Third By WILLIAM C PHILLIPS Staff Correspondent MONMOUTH PARK, Oceanport, N. J., June 28. Greentree Stables One Hitter made it two stake successes in a row at Monmouth Park for the famous racing establishment by winning the mile and a quarter Monmouth Handicap this afternoon by a length and a half span over Putnam Stables Combat Boots, who was just a nose in front of Rokeby Stables topweighted County Delight. Joseph Gavegnanos Joey Boy was fourth, another two and a half lengths to the rear, and a half dozen lengths in front of the only other starter, Mrs. E. L. Hopkins Three Rings, who trailed all the way in a dull effort. One Hitter, emulating the success of his stablemate Northern Star in the Rumson Handicap last Wednesday, was favored by the crowd of 22,500 and returned .20. Time for the distance was clicked off evenly by Joey Boy setting the pace and One Hitter reached the end in 2:04 three seconds off the track and stake record, but pretty good for the dull condition of the otherwise fast strip. Mrs. Iselin Makes Presentation Mrs. Phil Iselin, wife of the Monmouth Park treasurer, made the "presentation of a silver plate to trainer John M. Gavers first assistant, George Poole, with lovely screen star Jane Wyman adding her congratulations. One Hitter, who seems able to win only under modest weight assignments, made the victory today under 108 pounds for his second score in six outings this year. He picked up 8,750 of the gross 8,050 purse, and now has earings of 7,-650 for his 1952 campaign. Despite the smallness of the field for this seventeenth running of the Monmouth inaugurated in 1884 it was a thrilling event from the moment starter Eddie Blind sent them on their way. Ferando Fernandez sent Joey Boy into the lead next to the rail and allowed his recent Omnibus victor to run- along freely, while Logan Batchel-ler had Combat. Boots under a tight rein racing lapped on him on the outside and County Delight was showing good speed while under wraps from Sammy Boulmetis, just a short daylight spread behind. Teddy Atkinson was within striking dis- Continued on Page Thirty-Nine One Hitter Carries Off Top Honors in Monmouth Whips Combat Boots in Favorites Rofe, With County Delight Third Continued from Page One tance with One Hitter at all times behind the top three, and obviously had a running horse under his smooth rating, although he had appeared a bit choppy in his warm-up. County Delight dropped back slightly while showing a tendency to climb down the backstretch, and One Hitter moved up on the outside of him rounding the final turn, while Combat Boots was given punishment to take command from Joey Boy. After settling into the stretch, Combat . boots, County Delight- and One Hitter spread, across the inner portion of the track : as a team. County Delight tried to. stay with One Hitter, but just could not manage : with his heavy impost, and One Hitter steadily surged to the front oh the outside and then drew clear when Atkinson finally got his whip uncocked to give One Hitter a couple for luck coming to the wire.
