Jampol Surprises in Leonard Richards Holds Head Margin On Golden Gloves Odds-OnHighScudGivesWay To Lea d e rs Af te r Ga i n i rig Top Following III Luck at Start By FRED GALIANI Staff Correspondent DELAWARE PARK, Stanton, Del., June 28. Recovering the form he showed in the Preakness Prep and Preakness Stakes, Max Kahlbaums Jampol blistered his way to a head victory in the fifteenth running of the Leonard Richards Stakes here this afternoon. Second money went to Belair Studs Golden Gloves, while the odds-on High Scud, from the King Ranch, finished third, half a length back, after being away poorly and. being handicapped right from the start. Under Eugene Rodriguez, Jampol covered the mile and eighth in 1:50 over the fast track and returned 800 to his backers. The Leonard Richards is getting to be the graveyard of odds-on favorites. Three years ago the heavily-backed Capot and Wine List entry was disqualified after finishing first and third, while King Ranchs Middlegrouhd, Derby and Belmont winner in 1950, failed that year as a short-priced horse. The victory was good for 2,035 to owner Kahlbaum, who formerly was a hotwalker for Ben Jones and other horsemen before he came into his own as a trainer. In addition he received a huge and handsome trophy from Mrs. Warren Richards, daughter-in-law of the late first chairman of the Delaware Racing Commission to keep as his possession for one year, while a smaller replica was also given him for his trophy room. Jampol was claimed last year by Kahlbaum for ,000. First Tally Since Preakness Prep This was the first victory for the three-year-old gelded son of Thumbs Up Winkle II. since he won the Preakness Prep last month. Since then he finished second in the Preakness, but his subsequent form was not up to par. He was sixth in the Jersey and sixth in the Kent, to High Scud, when he gave that horse four pounds. Today he was in with 119 pounds, equal topweight with the favorite. High Scud was given an excellent ride by Hanford, despite his barely missing all the money. The horse got off slowly and Fox-catcher Farms Chello, came over on him, possibly hitting him, forcing Hanford to take back. When High Scud finally got running, Hanford worked him up from last place, needled his way through a tiny hole at the head of the stretch and appeared I still to have the race won, when Jampol and Golden Gloves got the last final, surge to gain them first and second places, respectively. The abating of the heat wave attracted a crowd estimated at 18,500 and while the weather was still humid it was a far cry from the blistering heat of the last couple days. Fred R. got the lead at the start of the Richards, while High Scud was away last. Fred R. set all the pace until they hit the far turn, where both Brush Burn and Golden Gloves yoked him and Jampol moved into the fourth spot. High Scud had been sent up to fifth at this point and was closing ground rapidly. As they swung around the last turn and headed for home, Fred R. dropped out of it and High Scud came between him and Golden Gloves, while Jampol was on the outside and run- ning strongly under Rodriguez. Hanford 1 was working desperately with his whip at the eighth pole and had a slight lead over his two rivals and as they thundered down the stretch the trio were only inches apart. The early efforts of High Scud began to take toll and he was unable to fend off the i rushes of Jampol and Golden Gloves, although they hit the wire almost as a team, ! with Jampol getting the nod by a head from the camera.
