Epic King, handsome brown son of Kings Blue and Epic Lady, carried Mrs. J. H. Woodcocks silks to air impressive victory here today in the Middlebelt Purse, one of the better attractions on a splendid week-end program. Epic King responded to a well-judged ride from Freddie Redmon and streaked the five furfongs over the fast strip in :58, establishing a new track record for the distance. The Woodcock colts margin over Theodore D. Buhls Good Times at the wire was three-quarters of a length while the latter gelding earned place honors by four lengths from the G. and G. Stables speedy filly, Short Tint, third in the field of 10 two-year-old starters. Jerry McCarthys Eternal Sir was along to salvage fourth, money, neck off Short Tint. First Out Since April 10 Epic King, making his first appearance under silks since winning the Jonabel Purse at Keeneland April 10, carried high weight of 119 pounds under the Middle-belt conditions while chipping a fifth of a second from the old track mark. No better than third choice to the Henry Forrest entry and the Paddock and G. and G. duo in the totalisator, the Ohio-owned victor was good for a 4 to 1 in the straight pool. Mrs. H. Allen Campbells colors were carried successfully in the six furlongs opener by the favored Al Hash, ridden by Tommy Barrow. Coming from well back during the early running, the four-year-old gelded son of Hash reached the lead during the stretch and then held on determinedly to beat Brescoll and Closes fast-finishing Arcourt by three-quarters of a length. Three and one-half lengths away, Mrs. M. J. Hoy-dies Little Zac earned the show, a length on E. Wards Impressment. R. A. Paracheks Ohio-owned Leading Man, with William McKinley Cook at the ! reins, was a front-running victor in the J three-quarters mile second race. After engaging Nifty until inside the stretch, the six-year-old Boss Hoss-sired winner, whipped Mr. and Mrs. K. M. Blanks What-anurse by slightly more than a length while a nose away, Mrs. R. Coons Donquest ran third. Nifty, a member of the G. L. Wilson Stable, engaged Leading Man for the major portion of the sprint distance and reached the lead between calls approaching the stretch, then faltered and wound up fourth in the 12-horse field. Leading Man, clocked in 1:11, was second choice at slightly better than 4 to 1 and, coupled with Al Hash in the Daily Double, returned 8.20 in the special pool. Mrs. Audrey Gabel, Michigan turf lady, saddled her first successful charge of the current Michigan season, sending out ABC Stables Lucky Chips to capture the three-quarters mile third race. Lucky Chips, showing marked improvement under jockey Johnny Nazareths handling, went about her task in game style, establishing a good lead approaching the stretch, then retained the advantage to the final marker, trimming Buckley and Locklears Count Steel by a three lengths margin while the Campbell Stables Blabber Mouth was along for third, a neck off Count Stell and a nose before T. D. Buhls Sweep Bolt, fourth in the band of a dozen starters.
