Two Steeler Rookies Sign For 1952 Football Season PITTSBURGH, Pa., June 28 UP. The Pittsburgh Steelers football roster jumped to 34 players today when two of the clubs most promising rookies returned signed contracts. Latest to sign were Pat Smithwick, of St. Norbets College in Wisconsin, and Jack Gearding, of Xavier University in Cincinnati. Smithwick has been called the greatest player ever produced at St. Norberts. He smashed every pass receiving record in the Midland conference, and ended his collegiate career with 94 completions for 13 touchdowns. Gearding, a 6 foot, 3 inches, 230-pound tackle, was voted the outstanding tackle at Xavier and was selected the best linesman in the North-South game at Miami last year.
