Making her first start since an unsuccessful attempt to add the Columbiana to her seasonal laurels during the winter at Hialeah, Bless America showed an unusual amount of early speed as she took charge immediately after the start. The shifty filly sprinted into a commanding four-length lead soon after" the start and continued on gamely while stepping the quarter in :22% and the half in :46 flat. At the latter point Carry the News remained in closest pursuit as Valadium and Mabs Choice were within striking distance. Curving into the home lane Bless America began to shorten stride and as the furlong marker came into view the eventual winner had replaced the tiring leader. Once in command Carry the News responded to brisk urging from her rider and set out to increase her advantage with every stride. Mabs Choice, who had drifted out slightly on the turn, showed a tendency to lub in while attempting to overtake the winner and it became apparent that she would be unable to accomplish her objec-tive.Valadium came between horses and ducked to the rail for the stretch run as Petal, on the complete outside, and La Perouse. inched into closer contention. Midway the final furlong Carry the News attained a clear advantage and apprentice Broussard was content to steady her and to await and expected challenge from other members of the group which failed to materialize. Carry the News crossed the finish an impressive victor, convincingly besting both Mabs Choice and and Valadium, who did not possess the necessary qualifications when the real test came. Bfess America tired badly during the late stages, but should benefit from the effort.
