Goodwins Penny a Pitch, a first-time starter who was unable to keep pace. Eddie Arcaro completed a consecutive triple on Lawdy Claudy, who returned .60. .40 to her admirers in the crowd of 21,364 that turned" out in sunny weather. There was no show wagering. It was another couple of lengths back to Penny a Pitch and Vir-Marie. who raced as a team for a quarter mile. Lawdy Claudy widened her lead rounding the far turn without being urged, while Erian was already under pressure in an effort to keep pace, but seemed to have i lost her smooth action, j Lawdy Claudy_ sailed into the- stretch ■several lengths in the van and drew out with every smooth, ground-devouring stride, while Erian was unable to withstand the belated rush of Vir-Marie, who had won her only two previous start in Maryland, but had carried a ,000 claiming tag last out.
