Open Heir Heads Seven In Cahokias Springfield Nine-Race Mid-Week Card Has Three Events Listed for Routers By J. J. IIAHN CAHOKIA DOWNS. East St. Louis. 111.. May 7. — After making the announcement that only eight races would be carded Wednesday night, the management, because of full fields and the attractiveness of the mid-week program, decided to bill nine events. Heading the racing menu is the Springfield Purse a six and one-half furlongs dash for three-year-olds and upwards in which seven are entered. The headliner is supported by many other good races, including the sixth, a route performance over the one mile and three-eighths distance, longest of the current session. During the early part of the session a majority of the races programmed were made up of five -furlong dashes but there are only two billed for Wednesday night, the first which is carded for three-year-old maidens and the fifth which brings together horses of the ,750 claiming class. Because of incessant rains during the month of April many horsemen with distance runners were unable to get their charges ready for the first week of the meeting but with ideal conditions prevailing recently conditioners are expected to enter their campaigners more frequently in the weeks to come. In fact, racing secretary L. H. Van Zandt has billed two other distance races other than the marathon affair. They are the one mile eighth and the one mile and 70 yards ninth race. Heading the Springfield is Open Heir, who has raced at the meeting. The Oren Couch colorbearer is being asked to pick up 120 pounds for his engagement and is spotting his rivals from five to 13 pounds. Entered against the high -weighted Open Heir are Arioso II. owned by Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Logsdon, Waco Girl, a recent winner at the meeting. Earl Burwells speedy Cuban-bred. Turquesa. Marcy Anne, who has also had one start. Calloway K.. who was defeated by Mighty Epic last week, and Mr. and Mrs. G. B. Holmans Eternal Frolic who is expected to make her seasonal debut. While Open Heir is spotting his rivals much weight there is a possibility of either Calloway K. or Eternal Frolic being made the public choice. Eternal Frolic raced well at New Orleans and Hot Springs this past | winter and while she failed to win a race, some of them were good enough to entitle her to favoritism in the mid-week feature, although she would prefer a longer distance than the six and one-half furlongs. The five furlongs fifth in which the higher - claimers are to meet attracted many local favorites. Expected to match strides in this dash are Eternal Sam, Carol Storme, Spring Rain, Partner Tim, Yellow Fly, Easter B. Her Chance and Stretchable. Another interesting event is the eighth at one mile. It brings together London, Bud K, Last Word. Mr. Poise. Bernour, Moon of Hearts and Be Free. The marathon affair attracted such well known distance performers as Silly Sis. New Light, Tax Four, Major Tee. Pickmen. Wise Billing and Mr. Tab.
