BUBBLING OVER QUALIFIES FOR THE DERBY 9 • Displays Tremendous Speed in Winning the Blue Grass Stakes • Lowers Mile and an Eighth Track Record in Out-standing Performance of Lexingtons Closing Days Program , LEXINGTON, Ky., May 5.— E. R. Bradleys Bubbling Over, ace of the Idle Hour Farms "flying squadron" that will carry the white and green silks in the ISM renewal of the Kentucky Derby, to be decided at Churchill Downs May 15, gave a record exhibition this afternoon over the Kentucky Association course when he led home Boot to Boot, his stable companion, and Helens Babe and Alleghan, which comprised the field in the Blue Grass Stakes, which annually serves as a pre-Derby test, and by going the distance in .:X-, he reduced the former record of 1:50%. made by One Step. It was a surprising speed exhibition and electrified the crowd. At no time did it appear that Bubbling Over was fully extended. His stride was frictionless and he appeared actually under reserve for most of the way and particularly near the finish. Only those who bad a watch on him had a realization of the speed displayed. Those timing him were _of the opinion that he would crack long he- : : — — — ~*g -v fore fore the the finish, finish, but but he he continued continued without without the the fore fore the the finish, finish, but but he he continued continued without without the the slightest signs of diminishing the fast pace he was making. He covered the first quarter in :22%, the three-eighths was made in :33%; the half was negotiated in :45; the five-eighths dip the hill was accomplished in :572*;: the three-quarters in 1:10; the seven -eighths in 1:22% and the mile in 1:36%. He was eased in the last sixteenth to linish eight lengths before his stablemate. which in turn was six before Helens Babe and a like distance separating Alleghan from the Headley filly. Had Bubbling Over been forced out it is probable that he would have come to close to Chilhowees American record of 1 :48% made at I*atonia Many had expected that Bubbling Over and Boot to Boot would be allowed to take matters easy during the race for they appeared to greatly outclass their competitors, but Mr. Bradley wanted to give Bubbling Over a stiff work out and instructed jockey Legere to send him along at a fast pace. It marked the third time during this meeting that representatives from the Idle Hour Farm had finished first and second in races they had started in during the present meeting. It also marked the third victory that E. R. Bradleys three-year-olds had scored in the Blue Grass Stakes. He finished first and second with Black Servant and Behave Yourself in 1921, when Behave Yourself reversed this running with his stable mate in the Kentucky Derby. The following year Busy American was victor. DUKEDOM A SURPRISE. Dukedom furnished the surprise of the opening race number when he won in the last few strides from Boys Believe Me and Colonel Schooler. Dukedom acted frac-tiously at the post, but began well and raced prominently during the early stages overhauling the leaders in the last seventy yards. Boys Believe Me followed Colonel Schooler under restraint for the first five-eighths and passed the latter in the last sixteenth, but succumbed near the end to the winners rush. A good band of two-year-olds accepted in the second race and it enabled G. Frank Croissants Realtor to lead the others to the finish with the J. N. Camden pair. Sun dance and Hydromel. finishing second and third respectively. Realtor was lucky to avoid interference and starting from an outer position, enabled him to go into a quick lead and he held sway throughout under a hustling ride. Aloma, a fast st£ ter. gave a sparkling exhibition in the race. She bolted at the stretch turn and then swerved hack again to the inner rail. She finished strong and raced like a crack filly. MEMFEK A FAII.I.KK. Form players suffered again in the An Ilevoir Handicap when Menifee and Pigeon Wing II.. the two best backed ones, suffered decisive defeat and failed to get a part of the purse, the winner being Malcolm B. Jr., which outstayed Thundering after a hard drive. Thundering was a contributor in Menifees defeat. He forced him at his best pace in the early stages causing him to tire in the last sixteenth. Thundering also began tiring from his early effort Pigeon Wing II. was done after half a mile and quit badly. My Destiny, making her third start in as many racing days, furnished the surprise in the third race at a mile and a sixteenth when she led for the entire distance and outstayed Xtra, with Beautiful Addie in third place. Happy Bob and Blue Torch were the favored ones here, but both were badly ridden, and they brought up far in the rear, having been raced into exhaustion, in the first t hree-u.ua rters.
