§ $ Mishap to Kentucky Derby Favorite LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 30.— Joseph E. Wideners Derby candidate, Osmand, favorite for the famous race, met with an unfortunate mishap as he returned from the track this morning after a two mile canter, which may eliminate him as a starter in the big event. He stepped on a rusty wire nail on the way back to his barn, the nail penetrating to the quick of the left forefoot of the gelding. Dr. Henry Harthill was immediately summoned and "Billy" Williams, the "plater" of the Widener Stable, extracted the nail, after which iodine was administered to the injured member and it was bound up in bandages. The Downs track has been using cinders on the paths about the stables and those leading to the barns from the track and quite a number of burned and rusty nails have been found in the cinders, but no other horse to date has been maimed by such an accident as occured to Osmand this morning. Dr. Harthill prescribed poultices for the foot to draw out the soreness, if any develops, and he refused to say how serious the injury might prove to be at this time. The blood flowed freely as the nail was removed, which is a good sign, and Osmand was taking his walk around the shed with the other horses in his set, never taking a lame step, but tomorrow will show how serious the wound may prove to be and then steps will be taken looking to his future training for the Derby. • S
