SAXON SENSATIONALLY ♦ Beats Black Panther by a Nose in Wood Memorial Stakes. ♦ Distraction Easily Accounts for Colorado Stakes — Double for James Fitzsimmons. ♦ NEW YORK, X. Y„ April Ml— Saxon, the son of Broomstick and Homely, that races fur the Creentree StahU- and a candidate for both the Preakness and the Kentucky Derby, in a game fought finish, was winner of the Wood Memorial Stakes, the big feature of th- Saturday racing at Jamaica. The race was worth .050 to the winner and just a nose back of him came Walter J. Salmons Qlail Panther and a half length further away was Harry Payne Whitneys Boston-ian. The finish was most thrilling and the fact that all three are in the Kentucky I erhy made the race of additional importance. The Colorado Stakes for two-year-olds, a companion feature, brought victory to Distraction from the Wheatley Stable. The day was cloudy and cold, making it anything but comfortable for a big half holiday en.wd. The track was fast, but the weather militated against really fast time. Ten went to the post in the Wood Memorial and the start was a good one. Saxon, beginning from the middle of the bunch, was at once sprinted away by Ellis, with the result that he was a couple of lengths clear of his company before the back stretch was reached. Wee Burn, one of the Ziegler starters, was in second place, with Black Panther galloping strongly back of them. Justice K. was further back and to an extent pinned in on next to inside the rail around the first turn. Bostonian met with a bit of interference as the horses swung around that first turn, while Juggler was fortunate in escaping the interference. HOW RACK WAS RUN. Once safely into the back stretch with a lead of a couple of lengths, Ellis took hold of Saxon and rated him along. Maiben had moved up on the outside of Black Panther and his mount was galloping alongside of Wee Burn, while Juggler was right with them and also going strongly. McAtee still had Justice F. next to the inner rail and the imported colt was racing freely and apparently with ample room. As Maiben moved on the outside McAtee matched the move on the inside and it ap-seemed to falter slightly and Black Panther more than any other horse as the real danger. Th -n three-eighths from home Justice F. seemed to falter slightly and Black Panther continued to draw up on Saxon, but the son of Broomstick was still clear and going well. By this time Abel had moved on but he had to go a bit wide. An eighth out the colt looked a winner, but he tired slightly. Black Panther was right alongside Saxon now, but Jlllis was driving the Creentree colt to the limit, whach was hanging on with great gameness. Black Panther was a stride short anil Saxon was winner. Bostonian had his nose at Black Panthers saddle skirts and five lengths further back Juggler beat Justice F. for fourth. The Tijuana Derby winner was trying to do a bit too much when he attempted to give away weight to the good ones in the Wood Memorial, but his race was a good one nevertheless. The companion piece of the Wood Stakes was the Colorado Stakes for two-year-olds at five-eighths and was worth ,400 to the winner. It brought victory to Distraction, from the Wheatley Stable, and incidentally marked up a double for James Fitzsimmons, for he had saddled William Woodwards Flambino in the previous race. Jockey D. McAuliffe shared in the double when he rode both winners. UmWUlitM CRESSIDA. It was unfortunate that on the way to the post Cressida. from the Creentree Stable, ran away with little Arnold and she circled the track before she was caught. That of course eliminated her from the contest. The start for the Colorado was none too good and Distrait ion and Sport Hallahan. the two-year-old champion of winter racing at New Orleans, were the ones to jump to the front. I Told You. from the J. J. Timmerman stable, was in third place and the others rather strung out. while Arnold sensibly pulled Cressida up at the start. Sport Haliahan held Distraction safe until the three-eighths post was reached. There he showed skiis of tiring and the son of Chicle drew out to a lead of a couple of lengths. On the stretch turn Handy, a stablemate to Cressida. moved up with a rush and for an instant was showing in second place, but Distraction had plenty in reserve and he drew out easily in the last eighth to be home the winner by three lengths. Sport Hallahan was coming again at the end to land in second place and William Ziegler. .Ir.s, Kirkover. finishing with excellent courage, was a close third and five lengths before Subl -vado, the Kancocas Stable starter that was going well when too late. There came a close fit in the opening mile and a sixteenth race for lowly ones, when F W. Barlows Prattle just nosed out W. A. Rosens Aversion, in fact, the finish was so close that many were of the opinion that Aersion was the winner. S. Flahertys Highwayman saved third and the others were in rather strung out order. Aversion was particularly best of those in the field, but the inexperienced IJarcene sent her out into a long lead in an effort to make a runaway of the race. He probably would have succeeded had he been able to give the mare any help in the stretch, but he hindered rather than helped her when sIm- tired, after having been rushed along so fooli.-dily. Prattle worked her way into second place early and. in the run through the str ti-h. Aversion carried her out badly until the pair of them finished on the outside of th«- course. Highwayman was fairly well up all the way. William Woodward seems to have a truly good three-year-old filly in a daughter of Wrack — Flambette which was not raced last year. She was winner of the second race, at three-quarters, and it was only her second racing effort. What made her performance an impressive one was the fact that, giving away thirteen younds on the scale to as good a four-year-old as Nichavo. she outgamed him to win by a head. Three lengths further back the Aknusti Stables Premier easily disposed of Tester for third place. It was the first appearance of the season for Nichavo. while the others had all raced and. of course, that gave each of them an advantage in condition, but he ran a smashing good race, though beaten. The Rancoeas Stable scored a double victory when Nassack won the fifth race and Lachen accounted for the sixth. Nassack dashed away and held command by a safe margin throughout, while Iiu-hens success was just as easily achieved.
