ARRIVALS AT ALAMO DOWNS Nearly- One Hundred and Fifty Horses Now at Track. Twenty-One Day San Antonio Spring Meeting Opens April 25 Barr Inspects Mutuel Plant. SAN ANTONIO, Texas, April 3. The stable of Johnny Zoeller was shipped to Alamo Downs today for the twenty-one day spring meeting that gets under way on April 25 through May 18. Zoeller wired officials of the local jockey club for reservations for nine head, including Sir Kai, Benedict T., Brilliant Son, Scythe, Kings Minstrel, Hannah Anne, Cheka, -Miles Standish and Gala-mist. Scythe and Kings Minstrel raced at the inaugural spring meeting a year ago, when they showed a liking for the course, and they will be trying to pick up their string of victories. The presence of Zoeller signalizes the return of the two leading owners and trainers of the 1934 spring season. J. D. Mikel, who led the owners at that meeting, already has sixteen horses on the track and will supplement that -shipment with five others now campaigning at Arlington Downs. Other well known owners whose colors will be in evidence are B. B. Rice, X,. C. Pike, Dave Christian, E. D. Slavin, H. McCloud, H. and H. Stock. Farm, Woodward and Smith, H. C. Rumage and many others. Among recent arrivals at the Downs were Rose Leonardo, Miss Jap and Jack Collins. This trio was shipped to San Antonio from Houston and will be rested up for the April 25 inaugural. Joe E. Barr, in charge of the mutuels at Alamo Downs, was a visitor over the weekend. Barr inspected the certificate plant at the track which is being enlarged and improved. Ten new windows are being added to the main line, including six for sellers and four for cashiers. Barr expressed satisfaction at the plant before returning to Fort Worth where he is in charge of the mutuel department at Arlington Downs. Five carloads of horses from Hot Springs arrived this morning. These eighty arrivals bring the number of horses already on the grounds to close to 150, with many more expected from California, Houston and other racing centers. Army officers stationed at Fort Sam Houston have approached Alamo Downs officials with the thought of featuring gentlemen jockey races during the approaching season. Entries in these events will be ridden by army officers and must carry 160 pounds over a half mile course. These races will undoubtedly be presented from time to time.
