PLANS FOR ROMAN SOLDIER Trainer Renter Plans to Start?Star Before Texas Derby. Sachsenmaier Three-Year-Old May Face Barrier Saturday at Arlington Downs Furfiber Dangerous. ARLINGTON, Texas, April 3 Roman Soldier, favorite, for the 5,000 Texas Derby, will make one start at Arlington Downs before the running of that race over a mile and an eighth on April 20, it was learned .from Phil Reuter, Wednesday, who, in partnership with Elwood Sachsenmaier, "owns the black son of Cohort- That one race may be Saturday, in one of the supporting features to the 5,000 Dallas Handicap. The latter will attract such as Ted Clark, Our Count, winner of the Fort Worth Handicap, Sweeping Light and other three-year-olds and over for the run over n mile and one-eighth. It will be the first" start for Roman Soldier since he ran third to Col. E. R. Bradleys Black Helen and the Maemere Farms Mantagna in the recent Florida Derby. He was bumped around quite a bit soon after the start in that race, but closed fast to take third money. Trainer Reuter is starting Roman Soldier once before the Derby in order to have the three-year-old on edge, and to test the horse against some of the other eligibles- for the rich stake. However, Reuter is confident that Roman Soldier will be the winner of the Derby. "I dont think that any one can beat Roman Soldier," said Reuter Wednesday afternoon. "The only way he can get beat is for the horse not to like the climate. I know hell like the track. Hes on edge now for the Derby and hell be there if the track is not muddy. If it is, I dont think Ill start him. Whats the horse I think I have to beat in the Texas Derby? I dont know much about any of them except Furfiber. He ran some nice races in Florida and is a much improved horse. There are many nice thinks about Whiskolo, Whizzaway and two or three others, but I believe Furfiber will give Roman Soldier the stiffest competition." Since purchasing Roman Soldier from Max Hirsch for ,500, Reuter has declined several 5,000 offers for the thoroughbred. He has won four out of six starts for Reuter and Sachsenmaier. He is one of the outstanding three-year-olds now racing. Roman Soldier had a useful preparation this morning, when he went a mile in 1:40, handily. He was in hand throughout and was joined by Keep Out for the final half mile.
