y LOWERS TRACK RECORD Billie Bane Wins Juvenile Stakes at Arlington Downs. Defeats Odds-On Choice, Empty-Bottle, Under Guidance of Jockey-George Woolf Big Crowd. ARLINGTON, Texas, April 3 George Woolf, who has acquired a stakes acquiring habit this year, added another score to his 1 1935 record, which includes the rich Santa Anita Handicap, when he drove Tommy ; Grimes Billie Bane to a new track record for the four and a half furlongs, and his second stakes triumph by accounting for the Juvenile Stakes, which featured another brilliant program offered by the Texas Jockey Club at its Arlington Downs course this afternoon. Running the distance in :52, which clipped four-fifths of a second from the old mark and within two-fifths of a second of the American record, Billie Bane carried his top impost of 122 pounds to a half-length score over Mrs. E. B. Carpenters Empty Bottle, odds-on choice. Four lengths separated the latter, and the Fishburn Stables Liz F., with J. L. Carricks Barbara A. fourth and well before Richstrike, Kingsbury, Plucky Jack, Master Buck, Imperial Maryan and The Flankman, which finished In the named order. RICHARD SUSPENDED. The race, which carried ,000 in added money, was worth ,680 to the New York owner and both the winner and George Woolf were making their Texas spring debut. Marred slightly when Barbara A. came over on the far turn which caused A. Richard to receive a ten days suspension, the early pace was very fast. Empty Bottle, due to his Florida and Texas victories, was a seven to ten choice and he sprinted into a three lengths advantage as he ran the quarter in :22 and the half mile in :46. The exacting weight of 119 pounds, however, proved too great and the winner, which was in nearest pursuit from the start, wore him down in the last stages to be drawing away at the end. After leading the others to the final furlong, Barbara A. gave way and Liz F., which had worked her way forward through the middle of the field, led her by a length and a half at the end. Richstrike, of which much was expected, was shuffled back on the far turn, and J. Deering was forced to send him to the outside for room. With the exception of Kingsbury, which was performing for the fist time with the blinker equipment and which held a forward position for three-eighths, the others were never factors. The winner, second choice in the wagering, returned for each straight. Cooler weather prevailed for the sport, and although the skies were cloudy during the morning they cleared somewhat before racing time. A crowd estimated at 8,500 witnessed the excellent card. PLAYMASTER SURPRISES. Another surprise came with the Black-stone Handicap that served as the fifth race when Howard Oots Playmaster led the well backed Marson, Bulstrode and five other three-year-olds, including the Texas Derby eligible, McCarthy, and Bill Donoghue to the finish of the Waggoner course sprint. Ridden by J. King, the Master Charlie gelding took command at once and after sprinting into a clear lead during the run to the far turn drew away again after Marson and Marmara, which were coupled as the L. J. Marks entry and an 8 to 5 choice, had offered a strong bid near the final quarter. The finish found him a length before Marson, which outfinished Bulstrode, the other of the three Derby eligibles to oppose the five non-eligibles. With the exception of Bill Doribghue, which tired rapidly after enjoying second place for nearly three-eighths the others were never factors. A mild surprise and nose finish climaxed the first race for three-year-olds over the Waggoner course when the Longridge Stables Civilian got up to beat Caleb. Four lengths separated the latter and Miss Cog with the others fairly strung out at the close. Although Miss Cog gained a big advantage -at the start, she was unable to Continued on eleventh page. After attaining a clear advantage in the run to the turn, the winner gave Avay to Caleb but the latter tired fast after widening his margin entering the stretch. Sweepogan, for which there was the greatest support, quit badly during the final furlong. Sugar Jar provided a popular score when the C. N. Wilkinson five-year-old Candy Kid gelding reached the finish of the second race slightly more than a length before Overshoes, which lasted to beat Hair Trigger a nose for second. Ten platers from the lowly ranks got away to an immediate start, with Overshoes sprinting info a clear lead during the run to the far elbow. After reaching the stretch, the winner, which was in nearest pursuit, responded well to Paul Keesters strong urging and after wearing Overshoes down drew away to his winning advantage. Odd Blue, for which there was good support, quit badly after enjoying a contending position for a half mile. The biggest surprise of the meeting and a fatal accident came with the third race which engaged a limit field of the better grade sprinting three-year-old platers over the. Waggoner course when H. C. Rumages Dozana was returned an easy winner and Tom Black was so badly cut down that he was later destroyed. Second went to Diavoless, a fielder, with Palasa third. Ridden by J. Johnson, the winner took command at the start and after sailing into a two-lengths lead, held that advantage to the end. Diavoless, which was in nearest pursuit throughout, was two lengths in the van of Palasa, which lasted to beat Left Over a half length for third. While holding third position nearing the far turn, Tom Black met with an accident and being eased up, he blocked several members of the field. High Hand II., which enjoyed favoritism, showed little, being far back the greater part of the sprint. Dozana returned 23.40 for each straight ticket. , . . I
