BOWIE TURF NOTES $ : R. L. Hanna arrived from Hot Springs with three horses, Barney Sexton, Bright Don and Peace Treaty. Baltimore, which has given such great riders to the turf as Lavelle "Buddy" Ensor, Alfred Johnson and Linus "Pony" McAtee, will offer its newest hope Thursday when George Walker, a 17-year-old lad under contract to Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, goes pbstward astride Chirac. Acautaw, Maddening and Impromptu are the first horses to be placed on the schooling list in Maryland this year. . Carroll Griggs, of Upperville, Va., who is under contract to Max Smart, made his saddle debut Wednesday. Jeff Edwards, agent for Carl Hanford, states the clever apprentice will come over Thursday from Havre de Grace to accept mounts. Word comes out of Charles Town, W. Va., that E. H. Tuckweiler, said to be an employe of the Maryland Jockey Club, had been named pari-mutuel manager for the thirty-six day meeting which opens May 13. Johnny Gilbert, contract rider for Glen Riddle Farm, which has twenty-four horses in training at Havre de Grace, came down Wednesday and swung right into action. John M. Gaver, of Baltimore, agent for Mrs. Payne Whitneys Greentree Stable, says the horses racing here will be sent to Havre de Grace for the twelve days sport, beginning April 15. Francis Dunne, assistant to racing secretary Jack B. Campbell, flew up from Florida, where he closed out the Tropical Park session. Commissioner Thornton, who is here, said if the horsemen want a wide open rule in Rhode Island it will be given them. Horsemen now racing here who intend to take in the three meetings at Narragansett Park are signing a petition which will be presented the Rhode Island Racing Commission asking for the abolishment of the pres- ent claiming rule in favor of a wide open one. i The apprentice allowance was waived on Jess in Wednesdays race and he carried 108 pounds. Edward J. Brennan, of Baltimore, who is , making up the programs for the ten-day spring meeting beginning May 21 at Hagers-town, says he is literally swamped with applications for stalls. Horsemen are advised that nominations for the ,500 Chesapeake on April 20; ,500 Aberdeen on April 24, and ,500 Philadelphia on April 27 at Havre de Grace close Thursday.
