Boxthorn is Edward Riley Bradleys principal hope for his fifth victory in the " Kentucky Derby. Neither Balladier nor Black Helen was nominated for the Churchill Downs classic, the former due to an injury suffered last fall and the latter because- of her sex, but the master of Idle Hour Farm is confident he holds an excellent chance for victory with the brown son of Blue Larkspur and Doreid, which won a Saratoga Special for him. Both Colonel Bradley and trainer H. J. Thompson rate Balladier the superior of Box-thorn as two-year-olds, but they are not sure the same will hold true this season over 9the longer distances, even though both are similar in type and are well fortified with speed and staying blood. Boxthorn wasnt the soundest colt in the world either when he was retired following the Futurity last fall and his ankles were treated with the idea of strengthening them. The Blue Larkspur colt arrived at the races in June at Aqueduct, but was well beaten in a dash of five furlongs won by Allen Z., with Dasher second and Moisson third. He was without support in the market. Boxthorn did not run again until at Saratoga, where he had to be content with second honors behind Sailor Beware in a dash of five and one-half furlongs. He was messed about right after the start and then tired near the end as if short. This he proved in his next outing, in which he led all the way in a maiden affair at five and a half furlongs, running the distance in 1:06, to defeat a number of other promising youngsters. Jim John finished second, Cat-sweep third, while Palma and Firethorn were other victims. He was the favorite. Boxthorn made his next start in the Saratoga Special when Black Helen was unable to represent Colonel Bradley. However, he made good in fine fashion, coming from behind the pace of Plat Eye and Psychic Bid to score by a length over the Greentree Stable colt. Today was a close third, with Omaha fourth. Others in the field in Americas most sporting race were St. Bernard and Bluebeard and each carried 122 pounds. The Bradley colt stepped the six furlongs in 1:12, comparatively good time at Saratoga last summer. The Sanford Stakes next engaged Boxthorn, but, under top weight of 122 pounds, he could do no better than run third, as Psychic Bid gained principal honors by leading all the way, with Omaha finishing second. Boxthorn gave each of these colts nine pounds, as he did Today, Sailer Beware and Old Story, among those which were behind him at the end of the Sanford. He was closest to the pace until the late stages, where he tired slightly. In the Hopeful Stakes, Boxthorn was coupled with Balladier and in running fifth he finished ahead of his stablemate. Sent out to make the pace, Boxthorn did not give way to Psychic Bid until entering the stretch and he faltered only in the final sixteenth, where Rosemont, Esposa and Omaha were able to pass him, the latter two beating the Bradley colt by very slight margins only. Boxthorns remaining two efforts were in the Champagne Stakes and Futurity. In the former, won by Balladier in record time, he was bumped and shuffled back at the start, but closed gamely to be fburth at the wind-up, Omaha and Plat Eye finishing just ahead of him. In the Futurity, Boxthorn displayed an even performance in finishing seventh, but he was beaten little more than a length for the place by Balladier, being in a bunch with Plat Eye, Omaha, Good Gamble, Rosemont, Shoeless Joe and Nautch at the end. Chance Sun was a handy winner through the, muddy going. By Blue Larkspur, one of Americas greatest horses since Man o War, Boxthorn gains additional strength through his dam, Doreid, an imported daughter of Galloping Simon by Melton and a half sister to stakes winners in France. The third dam, Splendid, was a half sister to Collar, Star Ruby and Sceptre and the fourth a sister to Ormonde. Such breeding compels Boxthorn to be held in greater regard as a smart three-year-old prospect.
