r THOMAS STARTER AT DETROIT SAN MATEO, Calif., April 3. Edward Thomas, starter at Longacres and for years first assistant to Harry Morrissey, dean of American barrier officials, has been engaged to do the starting at the spring meeting at Detroit, which gets under way in May. Thomas, who is at present serving as patrol judge at Bay Meadows, has had a world of experience with horses, having been employed on race tracks throughout the country since his youth. He is a native Cali-fornian, having been born at Sonoma. Following the Detroit meeting he will return to Seattle to preside over the barrier at the Longacres summer meeting. Other western officials engaged for the Detroit meeting are William A. Quigley, presiding judge at Bay Meadows, who will serve as associate steward at Detroit and James F. Gallagher, who will serve as placing judge.
