OFFICIALS FOR NARRAGANSETT . State Appoints Steward for Trio of Coming Meetings. 4 Sam Nuckols Will Preside in Stand at Paw-tucket Course Horgan Success as Secretary. PAW TUCKET, R. I., May 31. With tha appointment of the Rhode Island state steward by racing commissioner James C. Thornton, the official racing family at Narragan-sett Park is now complete. Presiding in the stewards stand will be veteran Sam C. Nuckols of Versailles, Ky., recently operated on for appendicitis, but recuperating in a fashion that says, he will be back in good form for the opening date, June 19. Howard G. Reynolds, Boston newspaperman, and Charles B. Stickney, retired business man of New Hampshire, each acting as stewards at Rockinghams present meet, complete the trio of senior officials appointed by the track management. Under the states racing law the state appoints one steward for each meeting. Narra-gansett has three meetings this season and the state has named Benajmin Ladd Cook, George Gilland and Abel H. Tilton as its representatives. Cook, t popular society horseman, who served at both meetings last year, will work the first meeting, June 19 to July 6, a total of sixteen days. Gilland, a trotting horse enthusiast, will work the second meeting, August 12 to September 14, a total of thirty days. Tilton, who .had considerable experience with runners and trotters a couple of decades back, will be in the stand for the closing meeting, October 21 to November 16, a total of twenty-four days. Placing judges are Ben Holmes, who handles this position in addition to his handicapping duties; Harry Stringer, from Washington, D. C, a popular figure on Maryland tracks; and Vincent Treanor, New York newspaperman, who has figured as a steward and judge at Tropical Park, Hialeah Park and many of the better class tracks, are the other judges. George "Red" Palmer, one of the best of the younger officials, will double at paddock judge and patrol judge. In the latter duty he will have the co-operation of Walter Moriarity. Clerk of the scales is Alex J. Heffernan, a Chicago man, who has lived a full life in racing since he started as an exercise boy for Barney Schreiber back in 1898. Frank Harrington will again be the official timer, Bill Owen will be in charge of the jockeys room, Horace Wade returns to do the announcing, Bob Turner, with red coat and pony, will lead the thoroughbreds as they parade to the post and Fred Craf ton will keep the horsemens debit and credit ciccounts Last, but by no means the least, Americas ace starter and king of all racing raconteurs, Harry Morrissey, will press the button at the Bahr gate. Morrissey is expected in this week and schooling from the barrier at the morning works will begin on his arrival. Pat Horgan continues to win high praise from all racing folk in his handling of the racing secretarys office. Pat stepped into big shoes when he succeeded Jack B. Campbell, but the ex-Holy Cross youngster is turning in a grand job. 4
