A majority of the best juvenile prospects quartered at Washington Park have been named to start in the Prairie State Stakes, 55,000 added dash of five and one-half furlongs featuring the second Saturdays program at the local course tomorrow; Twenty-three youngsters are in the overnight field and if all go to the post the event will have a gross value of ,780. With a return of clear weather today, after rain and cold since Monday, conditions for tomorrows sport promise to be at their best, with the result that the new management of Washington Park is making plans to handle a record crowd. President John P. Harding and general manager Roy Carruthers were jubilant today over the Continued on thirty-fifth page. BIG FIELD OF JUVENILES .Continued from first page. Aperitif, and the Starmount Stables Brindle. wonderful turnout for Memorial Day, despite the bad weather and track, and they are confident the meeting will be one of the finest in the history of the track. Few untried youngsters were included in the unwieldy overnight field; contrary to the usual condition, not a single first starter was named out of the list of 144 that were nominated for the stake. The post of favorite, overnight at least, went to the Bomar Stables Grand Slam, a handsome chestnut son of Chance Play that was shipped from Detroit two days ago, and which jockey Eddie Legere was brought on especially to ride. Grand Slam has a fairly impressive record, in view of the few races he has run. He finished close up in the Aberdeen Stakes at Havre de Grace to tip-race-goers off to the fact that he is a good race horse. A little later he came driving; home the winner by three-quarters of a length in the Nursery . Stakes at Pimlico. The horse he beat that day was A. G. Vanderbilts Postage Due, and the latter proved himself one of Americas ranking two-year-olds last Thursday by running a neck behind Maeriel in the Juvenile Stakes at Belmont. The two most highly regarded of the spring two-year-olds White Cockade and Coldstream were third and fourth. Grand Slam is not relying upon remote past performances for the Prairie State, however. Before leaving Detroit he was set down for five furlongs and turned in one of the best works of the season at that track by going the distance in 1:00. Next to him in overnight favoritism, and possibly the post time choice, will be another Detroit entry, that of the Dixiana stable of Charles T. Fisher. Trainer Clyde Van Dusen has named three, the bay gelding Erin Torch and two fillies, Thatagal and Brendard. Erin Torch proved himself ready . by winning from a field of five other Prairie . State starters earlier in the week, .and That- agal finished right behind him.
