FERNANDEZ SCORES TRIPLE Duplicates Mack Garners Feat of. Three Winners at Latonia. , Scores Third Victory Astride Runaimick In Feature Race Close Finish Thrills Covington Fans. LATONIA, Ky., May 31. Two- and three-year-olds furnished the principal sport at Latonia today, which was featured by the brilliant riding of jockey F. Fernandez, the young Havana star, who is to begin serving a five-day suspension Saturday. He scored a triple, duplicating the feat of jockey Mack Garner, who won three races the day before he was to start his absence from the saddle for ten days for rough riding, the same offense for which Fernandez drew his vacation. The fifth race, one of the most attractive down for decision, engaged several of the better-grade two-year-old platers for a test of five-eighths, and culminated in one of the closest finishes of the meeting when Runamuck and Dora May came to the end so closely aligned that only the judges were in a position to-separate them. The former gained the decision, but only after giving a rare exhibition of gameness under one -of the most superb saddle performances of the meeting. Dora May, Capt. Nadi and. the ultimate winner left the starting point almost as a team and continued in close formation for almost the entire distarice. Capt. Nadi was the first to tire under the strain of matching strides with his stronger rivals and, when he drnTed back, Dora May took a slight lead, j aamuck came to -her at the sixteenth post and they indulged in a bitter struggle for supremacy, with the winner proving the gamest. Green and Red was well thought of in this, but after leaving the gate she failed to keep up and, under the timid riding she received, was outrun. Runamucks victory, besides completing Fernandez triple, was also the second winner saddled by trainer A. S. Lewis, who had saddled Jessie Dear for her winning performance in the fourth race. Fernandez other two winners were Jane F. in the first and Jessie Dear in the fourth. The Bosque Bonita Claiming Purse occupied the feature position on the card, and was for three-year-olds, over six furlongs. The winner here was Sweet Memories, home-. bred daughter of Bi.sy American, which performed under the symbols of J. B. "Rome" Respess. Jockey George South guided the filly in her triumph, and he gave her a good ride to land her winner by half a. length over the highly-regarded Flutter Up. The rank outsider, Tiger Claw, dropped into third place. The winner was well supported for this number. Summerlike weather prevailed for the racing, which was conducted over a fast track. Form players had a field day, no less than five of the first six favorites rewarding their backers. , Jockey F. Fernandez rode his second winner t when he brought M. Bransfields Jessie Dear to the line of finish four lengths before U. J. Haks Yenoc, while third went to the Kenton Farm Stables Roberta, which led home five others which tested their speed and stamina over the three-quarters course. The winner, a local favorite, had many admirers, and the victory was a popular one. They gave the daughter of Prince Pal a rousing welcome when she returned to the scales. Fernandez handled her cleverly in her engagement, and his reserving her off the early pace enabled her to stand a belated rush in the final stages and sweep on to victory in a decisive manner, Jane F., under the colors of Gorham and Young Brothers, gave a good speed demon-: stration when she was victorious over ten-others of her age which raced five-eighths in the opening race. Under a hustling ride by F. Fernandez, the victress followed the pace for the first quarter but so great was her eagerness to run at top speed that her rider had to allow her to take the lead, and once in the van she sped to the end with two and a half lengths to spare.
