VICTORY FOR CRACKLE Takes Winning Honors in Lafayette Handicap at Detroit. Attendance at Motor City Course Surprises Track Management Merry Caroline Scores. DETROIT, Mich., May 31. Mrs. A. M. Creechs Crackle carried off winning honors in the Lafayette Handicap, that featured the Detroit program here this afternoon. Taking command soon after the start and ridden by Charles Stevenson, another riding star from Idaho, the five-year-old Upset mare reached the end of the six-furlong sprint, for Grade C performers, a length and a half before the Elmtree Stables Dancing Spirit. Third honors went to the Rancho San Luis Rey Stables Sir Ridgway, which tired after forcing the pace to the stretch. An unexpected crowd, estimated at 7,000, was present for the sport. A fast track prevailed. There was a short delay at the start, but one e aligned the field of five got away in .splendid fashion, with Sir Ridgway the first to show. Shortly afterwards Stevenson, who triumphed with Jakovia, had the winner in command and, although she drew away in fine style, the lad put her under pressure when Dancing Spirit menaced in the last furlong. Miss Purray was the big disappointment. Making her first start under Mrs. Sam Orrs colors, she was never a factor. CLOSING TIME EASILY. Closing Time, Prince of Bourbon gelding which races for the Amalgamated Stable, left the maiden juvenile ranks when he was returned an easy winner of the first race. He reached the end of the five furlongs two lengths before the heavily supported Masked Smile. Missouri Girl was third. Indefinite, making her first start of the year and a member of the mutuel field, registered her initial success when she lasted to beat Amy Cooper by a neck at the end of the three-quarters second race. Third went to the weakly ridden Twidgets. Burley Parke furnished the winner of the third race, when Jakovia experienced little trouble in leading Suncircle Blaze, Uptodate and five other three-year-olds to the finish.
