DISTRACTING FIRST BY NECK Odds -On Smallman Entry Fails Back-, ers at Thorncliffe- Goodyear Claiming Purse Feature. TORONTO, Ontario, May 31. Distracting, a Wheatley Stable cast-off now racing for Richard Pending of Baltimore, drove to a thrilling- neck victory in the Goodyear Claiming Purse, the sixTfurlong feature at Thorncliffe Park, this afternoon. The three-year-old daughter of Distraction and Crimson Rambler came from behind to oyerhaul the unruly Shoeless Joe, which in turn was a length in advance of Lady Hockberger, third in the field of seven. Feudal Lord and Last Time, the odds-on Smallman entry, finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Shoeless Joe was probably best. The Black Servant colt delayed the start by his frac-tlousness for ten minutes, during which he bolted out of the six-furlong,chute, throwing the jockey and running away for half a mile before being caught. .The boy, unhurt remounted, and starter Rowe placed the horse outside the- stalls. Shoeless Joe began in front, but Lady Hockberger spurted to the front after a furlong, while Atkins took a hold on the former. Meanwhile, Distracting was away sluggishly, and Brooks did not rush her. He was content to allow her to improve her position on the turn, and reserved his move until straightened out in the stretch. Shoeless Joe moved to the front at the three-sixteenths post, and held command to the final strides, where he bowed before-Distractings powerful stretch charge. Lady Hockberger, tiring from her early efforts, just managed to crowd Feudal Lord out of the money by a head. The latter lacked his usual early speed, and appeared to sulk. Last Time retired after pressing the pace. for half a mile. .
