SALIVA AND PLATING TESTS Arrangements Made at Detroit for Examination of Horses by Duly Designated Authorities. DETROIT, Mich., May 31. At a conference held today between the stewards of the Detroit Racing Association, the official veterinarians, .Dr. Copeland and Dr. Cavell, and the plater for the stewards in the paddock, Perry McGill,- plans were perfected not only for the saliva tests but for the checking of proper plating on horses. W. J. Dowling, representing the racing commissioner, has provided a private stall in one of the State Fair buildings adjacent to the track, where tests on all doubtful horses will be taken and which will avoid the publicity attendant on the system last year of driving to the stable of the owner on whose horse the test was to be made. The stewards are adverse to any public examinations of horses feet in the paddock and are working in close co-operation with the licensed platers on the track who have been organized under McGills direction. The platers union is now officially recognized by the American Federation of Labor. The Detroit Racing Association has a pledge from every plater that no unfair practices will be used in the plating of horses and that they will report to the stewards any ,vhprse that has been improperly shod and has been brought to the plater for resetting or changing of plates. It is believed that this will be more effective than any system of surveillance.
