Ten high ranking three-year-olds, five colts, four gelum:; and one filly, named for the Latonia Derby, for its fifty-third running, were made eli- gible Friday to the richest prize of the Latonia Jockey Club spring meeting, the 5,000 added feature which is down for decision on Saturday. The field, one of the most evenly balanced since the inception of the historic stake, which had its inaugural in 1883, when it was won by Leonatus, should provide a .contest worth going miles to witness. There are two 1935 Derby winners among those named in the Greentree Stables Gillie, and Morrison and Keatings McCarthy. The former won the Santa Anita Derby, while Mc- m Carthy was victorious in the Louisiana! event. jH Not since Los Angeles and White raced tcH a dead heat in 1888 have competitors forH this stake been so evenly matched. While Gillie will probably rule favorite, his work will be cut out for him in Saturdays race. The strongest contention will undoubtedly come from Whiskolo, which finished third in the Kentucky Derby, and Blackbirder. must be reckoned with. The latters performance in the Churchill race was one to give him rank with the best that will vie for honors tomorrow. TEAROUT MUCH IMPROVED. D. B. Midkiffs Tearout is another which has given smart improvement in recent races and should perform in his best style over the mile and a quarter distance, a route that he has shown he should prefer. McCarthy has not displayed ability to conquer such high class performers but he must not be ignored in Saturdays race. With the late withdrawal of Mrs. Silas B. Masons Demonstration, she will pin her faith in The Mauler, which, it is reported, worked sensationally for the race before leaving the East. There were four of those named overnight that were given their final tighteners Friday morning. Gillie displayed the most speed of the quartet when he negotiated a half mile in :48, running the first quarter in :23-s. and three-eighths in :354flfr Tearout was also sent a half mile but his trial was a trifle over a second slower when he breezed the distance in :49t3. Blackbirder indulged in a slow breeze, turning a half mile in :50. Scarp, the only filly named for the race, went three-eighths ijafl COUCCI TO RIDE GILLIE. H Most of the riders for the race havelHBI engaged several days ago with but four those who will have mounts in the rs. A coming from other points. Silvio CoucciB arrived from New York to ride Gillie-jl George Woolf made the trip from Chicago to ride Whiskolo; while .former jockey Charlie Haincsworth brought Johnny Long hero from Columbus to pilot Blackbirder. Continued on fortieth page. . FIFTY-THIRD RUNNING OF LATONIA DERBY TODAY Continued from first page. Jockey Willie Hanka accompanied Tearout, which he will guide in the big race. Fair weather is predicted for the 4HH the management has prepared to haiH throng, having installed temporary-M ties for Derby Day. Requests for box reservations continue to come in and tne indications are there will be a sell out of the reserved sections. With weather conditions coming up to expectations, it is safe to say that the previous record attendances may be shattered. With the ten named starters accepting the race will gross 7,445, of which the winner willreceive 3,830. Allowance conditions govern the race, which allow non-winners of 0,000 five pounds; of a three-year-old race of ,000, .eight pounds, and maidens 12 pounds. The owner of the winner will also receive a silver trophy, presentation of which will probably be made by Governor Ruby Laffoon. Among the illustrious performers on the roster of Latonia Derby winners are Chil-howee, Broadway Jones, Bagenbaggae Toro, Gallant Knight and Fiji, the lavf among the fillies to win the race. Hj
