SEVEN STAKES TO BE RUN AT WASHINGTON PARK 3 e MEETING BEGINS AUG. 3 Washington Park Handicap With 0,000 Added Big Feature. . 4 Sheridan Handicap Has 7,500 Added Two New Events Announced for 1937. A Washington Park, whose thirty-one day meeting opens August 3 and closes Labor Day, September 7, will offer seven stakes headed by the Washington Park Handicap with 0,000 added, according to an announcement made today by general manager Roy Carruthers. At the same time, Mr. Carruthers announced plans for the Washington Park Futurity and Princess Pat Stakes to be staged for the first time during the 1937 meeting. These events are patterned after the Arlington Futurity and Arlington Lassie Stakes with, the Futurity fb be for two-year-olds with added money of 5,000 and the Princess Pat for two-year-old fillies with ,500 added. No mention of the American Derby was made in the Washington Park stakes announcement and it is presumed that .this famous Chicago race has been abandoned, at least for this year. The schedule of features for the coming meeting at the popular Homewood course is as follows: Monday, Aug. 3 Chicago Handicap, for three-year-olds and upward, six furlongs, ,500 added. Saturday, Aug. 8 Lakeside Handicap, for three-year-olds and upward, one mile, ,000 added. Saturday, Aug. 15 Prairie State Stakes, for two-year-olds, six furlongs, ,000 added. Saturday, Aug. 22 Sheridan Handicap, for three-year-olds, one mile and one furlong, ,500 added. Saturday, Aug. 29 Great Western Handicap, for three-year-olds and upward, one mile and one furlong, ,000 added. Saturday, Sept. 5 Washington Park Juvenile Stakes, for two-year-olds, six fur- j longs. ,000 added. A Monday, Sept. 7 Washington Park Han- I dicap, for three-year-olds and upward, one M mile and one-quarter, 0,000 added. GRADUATED DISTANCES. Following the plan adopted at Washington Park last year, races for older horses will be featured with four such stakes events at graduated distances being offered and culminating in the Washington Park Handicap. The first .race of the series will be at six. furlongs, the second at a mile, the third at a mile and one furlong and the last for the richest prize at a mile and a quarter. Three-year-olds will be given their opportunity in the Sheridan Handicap at a mile and a furlong endowed with ,500 and the youngsters will have their chances in the Lakeside Handicap and Washington Park Juvenile Stakes. The program was arranged at a confer- . encc between Carruthers and Charles J. McLennan, who has been re-engaged as the racing secretary. The latter also willsserv$ in a like capacity at Arlington Park. Nomination blanks to the Washington Park stakes and the Futurity events to be offered in 1937 are bein? mailed out to horsemen and breeders. Entries to this years attractions will close Wednesday, July 15, and to the Futurity and Princess Pat Stakes on Tuesday, September 15. In announcing the future events, Carruthers stated: "Wo wish to provide the finest type of racing at Washington Park and the only manner in which that can be done is to attract the very best horses. To do that we havo planned the Wshington Park Futurity and Princess Pat Stakes and they should have valuos that will attract the best two-year-olds from all parts of the country."
