The five-year-old son of Display and Ariadne hasnt raced since the Santa Anita Handicap, but he has been working brilliantly of late and is about ready for the kind of race his Rockingham engagement offers. It is the Rockingham Park Handicap at a mile and one-sixteenth with 0,000 added and undoubtedly Discov- ery will be the top weight, but whether he I can begin his summer campaign with a vic-L tory depends on circumstances, one of which f may be Roman Soldier, which has been invincible so far this season. The Vanderbilt star contested the Rockingham Park Handicap a year ago but had to be content with third place behind Identify, his stablemate, and Dark Hope. As a three-year-old Discovery ran in the Bennington Handicap at the Salem course, but had no chance after being carried very wide on the first turn. Two days later he established a new worlds record of 1:55 for the mile and three-sixteenths at Narragansett Park. Last spring Discovery began his campaign in the Toboggan Handicap and went through the Metropolitan, Suburban, Queens County and Rockingham Park Handicaps without winning. This season, following his let-up since the, invasion of Santa Anita, Discovery has been given plenty of time, perhaps awaiting warm weather in which he thrived last summer, before being brought up to racing pitch. That he is ready for the -wars is indicated by his recent mile trial in 1:37 at Belmont Park. After his New Hampshire engagement, the Vanderbilt star will be returned to New York to await the Brooklyn Handicap, which was his first winning effort of 1935. In that mile and a furlong affair Discovery established a new worlds record of 1:48, but it since has been equalled by Brevity and lowered by Indian Broom. After the Brooklyn on June 27, he may go to Arlington Park seeking to duplicate his last years victory in the Stars and Stripes Handicap. War Admiral may not have the National Stallion Stakes all to his own Saturday when that most important early-season special for two-year-olds is renewed at Belmont Park. Several good piospects have been revealed during the past few days including Black Look, a brown colt by Whichonc, and Beaming, by Whiskbroom II., in the stable of C. V. Whitney- Black Look made his debut in the Juvenile Stakes Saturday and came back Tuesday to run five furlongs in :584f,, with the wind neither with him nor against him. That effort brought about the first defeat .Continued on fourth page. The Tall Timber filly gave Black Look a hard battle in spite of her impost of 119 pounds against 112 on the Whitney youngster and less than a length separated them at the finish. The disappointment of the race, was Knight Gallant which Robert A. Smith had considered one of the best two-year-old prospects hes ever had in his charge, but the son of Sir Gallahad III. tired badly in the latter part of the race. The new arrangement of bookmakers at New York tracks this season whereby the more important layers are located in the clubhouse, is working out very satisfactorily. When New Yorks racing new deal came into existence two years ago, all the bookmakers were confined to the ring with representatives in the clubhouse. The latter had no freedom in laying a price or taking a large commission and as a consequence the clubhouse became deserted because the public refused to pay for empty privileges. Under the method in vogue this season, all bookmakers must have stands in the ring but those who operated in the clubhouse several years were permitted to return there so the heavy wagering again is done in the enclosure, but the odds generally can be beaten in the ring by small bettors, which is as it should be. Unfortunately, a majority of the ring bookmakers will not take even a substantial wager at the odds they have quoted and some sort of a rule should be made whereby they must accept at least a certain sum before making a cut. Dixie Princess won her first victory of the season at Rockingham Park Tuesday after having finished second eleven times and third once in her previous fifteen starts. . . . Myrtlewood, crack filly owned by Brownell Combs, returned to winning form in taking the Quickstep Handicap at Latonia Saturday and she now heads for Hawthorne. Combs would send her east but for the difference in track soil. . . . Three Ds Stock Farm permitted two fine riding prospects, in Johnny Nolan and L. B. Guymon, to get away from them, getting small sums for their contracts. . . . Bright Plumage, which has been training smartly at Belmont Park after a brief vacation, is being pointed for the Detroit and Chicago Derbies. . . . King Saxon also is getting ready for a return to racing after a short vacation and will be seen under colors at Aqueduct, his home track. A recent nine furlongs trial in 1:53 was very impressive. . . . Joseph E. Wideners principal reason for leaving for Europe before the Belmont Stakes running is to see iis colors carried in the French Derby,
