THORNCLIFFE FOOTING HEAVY Numerous Upsets Occur During Day With Dunlins Lad Furnishing Surprise in Best Race. TORONTO, Ont., June 3 With most of the better class performers kept under shelter owing to the uncertain condition of the track, which was still heavy from rains that fell late Monday and Tuesday, a card that was without a feature and embracing only th;e cheaper grade performers was offered for the second day of the Thorncliffe Racing and Breeders Association at Thorncliffe Park today. With nothing in the way of a leading attraction, most interest centered on the running of the fourth race, and one of the many upsets that occurred during the afternoon prevailed here when Dunlins Lad, from the XMrs. W. Russell stable, accounted for the race after a hard drive for his first score this season. Meeting nine other sprinters, the eight-year-old son of Dunlin, a noted mud performer, reached the end of the six furlongs before J. E. Smallmans Lorraine S., ruling choice, while third was accounter for by P. D. Fishers Kings Bounty. Racing back in seventh place during the early racing, while Cardamon and Blue Gum set the pace, the winner, under masterful handling of F. Dougherty, obtained room on the inside of the leaders when entering contention on the stretch turn, then surging on strongly, came to the end to win by two lengths. With the sun breaking through an overcast sky shortly before the opening race, a large crowd turned out for the second day of the meeting at the Leaside course. Racing was conducted over a heavy track and many surprises took place during the day.
