Interest Mounting in Renewal of 5,000 Added Chicago Derby 60 a tA PRELIMINARY TRIALS Doran and Sir Jim James Show Speed in Their Workouts. Eleven Starters Probable for Hawthornes Outstanding Race Hol-lyrood and Rushaway Choices. Good trials over the mile and one-quarter distance of the race by Anthony Pelleteris Doran, at Hawthorne, and E. W. Duffys Sir Jim James, at the Detroit Fair Grounds, yesterday, further enlivened interest in Saturdays tenth running of the 5,000 added Chicago Derby, Hawthornes principal stake. Doran worked the Derby route in 2:08, while the Duffy horse covered the long course in 2:06. Working under fine conditions, the two three-year-olds went through the trials in handy fashion. Only one other probable starter, J. L. Roberts Tugboat Frank, was asked for anything more than a gallop at Hawthorne. Limbering up for his final distance "prep" tomorrow, the Roberts colt breezed three furlongs in :38. H. P. Headleys Hollyrood, winner of the Detroit Derby and also still at the scene of that race; C. V. Whitneys Tatterdemalion, Northway Stables Valiant Fox and the triple Derby winner Rushaway, owned by A. G. Tarn, are others among eleven probable starters yet to receive their final preparation. Valiant Fox is at Arlington Park, and the Whitney and Tarn horses are at Hawthorne. Although he tired badly in the late stages of his long workout, Dorans final morning or private performance was a good one, possibly the best he has shown. His owner and others in the Pelleteri camp believe that it was exactly what was needed to bring him to top form for Saturdays important engagement. DORAN TIRES. The big son of Leonardo II. opened the long work with a quarter in :25 and, after covering the next two furlongs in the same time, went on in good stride to complete three-quarters in 1:15. He circled the mile of the west side course in 1:41 and closed the hard "prep" with a quarter in :27. Considering the easy pace at which he was rated over the early furlongs, some horsemen believe that he should have finished in stronger fashion, but the trial measured up to what his owner-trainer expected and as he should know his horse better than others, Doran may be expected to come through in his best style Saturday. According to advices from Detroit, Sir Jim James, while tired, was not distressed when pulled up after his splendid workout. This son of St. James and Eastern Fashion defeated Rushaway, among others, in the Detroit Derby Trial, but was not nominated for the Detroit Derby and therefore could not compete in that race. The Chicago Derby will give him his first chance with all the best of the western three-year-olds. With a victory over six other Chicago Derby eligibles in the Derby Trial Handicap here Tuesday to his credit, E. R. Bradleys Bow and Arrow found a new importance in Derby calculations yesterday. Willing to overlook his defeats in the Preakness Stakes, won by Bold Venture, and the Latonia Derby, annexed by Rushaway, turf fans are inclined to give the Bradley horse another chance. With a strong and popular-sized field assured, fans are evincing so much interest in the race that officers of the Chicago Business Mens Racing Association anticipate a near-capacity crowd for the day. Practically all reserved boxes and seats have been sold. The probable field follows: Horse. Wt. Jockey Hollyrood 126 Rushaway 121 J. Longden Dnieper 121 L. Haas Holl Image 121 Valiant Fox 118 L. Balaski Bow and Arrow 118 ..J. Renick Carvola 113 E. Arcaro Doran 118 C. Corbett Sir Jim James 118 Tugboat Frank 118 J. Deering Tatterdemalion 118
