MERRY CAROLINE WINS Old but Consistent Veteran Earns Purse at Detroit. Helios Finishes First in Fourth Race but Is Disqualified Purse to Inheritor. DETROIT, Mich., June 17. Merry Caroline, aging and consistent daughter of Car-laris, which races for Paul Kelley, won her first victory of the meeting and provided a popular score by taking the Ted Fio-Rito Claiming Purse, sixth event and main race offered at Detroit this afternoon. The Pelican, under top weight of 120 pounds, was second, a neck back of the winner and two and one-half lengths before Surveyor, which beat Prince Heather by a nose for minor honors. Leonard Turner, drove The Pelican to the front early, with Surveyor, and the winner in closest pursuit. Near the stretch Merry Caroline was sent to the outside of The Pelican and, steadily wearing him down, she forged to the front in the last stages, and was drawing away from The Pelican at the end. Gay Bubble quit badly after a half mile, and Surveyor saved ground throughout. Showing a liking for the good track, the winner raced the distance in the fast time of 1:12. A thunderstorm, a heavy rain and a disqualification kept the good sized crowd on edge for the mediocre program. The track was left in a good condition after the hard Continued on thirty-eighth page. Two-year-olds had a double opportunity of being under colors, and six started in the fifth, at five and one-half furlongs, the supporting attraction. This resulted in an easy victory and a mild surprise when Star Singer made every post a winning one. Clingendaal was second and Oddesa Girl third. Bright Land, a 9 to 5 favorite, was fourth. Ridden by N. Richardson-and carrying the colors of Mrs. C. S. Howard, California patron, Star Singer took command in the first few strides and after establishing a long lead responded in fine style to lead Clingendaal by a length and one-half at the end. The latter, which held second position throughout, was two lengths in front of Oddesa Girl, which wore Bright Land down in the drive. After several unsuccessful attempts here, Virbet, from the stable of Mrs. H. Torriente, Cuban owner, was a driving winner of the first race, for which Hocking and Neds Affinity shared favoritism. John Doe was second and Neds Affinity and Hocking finished third and fourth. Hearty, which has enjoyed favoritism several times during his previous twelve times under colors, graduated from the maiden ranks when the son of Greenock and Jealous lasted to beat Star Cluster by a neck at the end of the second race at five and one-half furlongs. Virnock was third. Virnock sped into a long lead during the opening three-sixteenths, but he tired under strong urging in the stretch. Noses separated the leaders in the third race, at six furlongs, with Mrs. Fred Algers Matapeake, Ivy Maxwell and Belleek reaching the end so closely aligned that the film was used to separate the leaders. A hard rain fell during the running of the race, but it failed to prevent House Warmer and Come Home from sprinting into a long lead and holding sway to the end of the opening half mile. J. Haritos drove the winner to the front in the last stages and he was good enough to withstand Ivy Maxwell, which was sent outside her opponents for the run through the stretch. Matapeake was a 3 to 2 choice. The first disqualification of the meeting came with the fourth race when Helios, which reached the end of the mile and a sixteenth a neck before Inheritor, was set back for a foul and "winning honors were awarded the latter. Brown Molasses was third. In closest pursuit of Brown Molasses during the first five furlongs, Helios, which favored the soft going, moved into the lead near the final half mile and after drawing clear he was permitted to bear out in the stretch and but for this, Inheritor would have been the winner.
