I.. Oct. 15. A crack field of New England sprinters will compete against several New York stars in the running of the Worcester Handicap, a six furlongs affair which features the opening day card at Narragansett Park, on Friday, October 23. Checking up this morning for possible starters, Tacing secretary Pat Horgan counts as possibilities, the Victor Emanuel mare, Miss Merriment: Mrs. M. E. Cassidys smart three-year-old. Bill Farnsworth, which ran a brilliant race here on September 19, when second to High Fleet, and one other sensational sprinter from the big city in Mrs. W. Plunkett Stewarts Mower all so-called New York horses. Against this band. New England can send the Miss A. Doris mare. Lady Higloss; the Araho Stables New Deal, freshened up and very fast; Dixianas Erin Torch or Miss Prudence, while such as Happy Knot, Party Spirit, Beefsteak, Bright and Early, and the sturdy Ladfield will complete a strong representation. E. D. Shaffer has prepared the four-year-old St. Bernard especially for this event, and Bob Smith, always a staunch supporter of the Rhode Island meeting, expects to start either Delphinium or Psychic Bid of the Brookmeade Stable. All of which figures to build the Worcester Handicap into a real horse race. Post time at Narragansett for the fall meeting will be 1:15 p. m., and president Walter E. OHara has already gone on record with the statement that the eight races daily will be run through strictly on scheduled time with no delays. This move is absolutely necessary because of early dark-! ness. To meet new post times, the Boston j train service times have been advanced, race ! specials now leaving South Station at 11:50 I a. m. and 12:15 p. m.. The former arriving at the track at 12:45, the latter at 1:10. i
