SGT. BYRNE TAKES FEATURE Carries Top Weight of 122 Pounds to Easy Triumph at Jamaica. Slmonetti Racer in Top Form Again Merry Maker Finishes in Place Position In Second but Is Disqualified. NEW YORK, N. Y., Oct. 15. John Simon-ettis Sgt Byrne, racing in his best form, carried top weight to victory in the six furlongs of the Polydor Handicap at Jamaica today. The son of Stimulus raced the distance in 1:11 to have a wide margin of. victory over Mrs. William Ziegler, Jr.s Marching Home, and Townsend B. Martins Stubbs took third from Fortification by a good distance. The only other starter was Victorious Ann. It was a busy day for the camera and for the stewards when in most of the finishes the photograph was called for, while there came a disqualification when Merry Maker was set back after finishing second, though no claim of foul had been made. In the feature sprint of the day Stubb3 was the one to cut out the pace. Rushed into a clear lead by Seabo he set a merry pace but Horn had Sgt. Byrne under restraint as the top weight ran along within striking distance and Marching Home was also going extremely well. EASILY DRAWS AWAY. Victorious Ann and Fortification had scant speed and were always well back of these. Stubbs was beginning to shorten stride before the stretch was reached and it was there Horn made his first move with Sgt. Byrne. When called on the five-year-old responded cheerfully and in a dozen strides had Stubbs beaten to draw away until his winning advantage was four lengths. Marching Home closed steadily in the short stretch and she also ran down the Martin gelding, to beat him half a length, for the place.. The other two were far back with Fortification butfinishing Warren Wrights filly. The third disqualification of the meeting came with the running of the third race, a six furlongs dash that attracted a smart band of juveniles. M. Sheas Merry Maker was the victim this time, and after finishing second to R. A. Masons Your Honor, he was set back for having fouled Top Radio in the stretch, though Top Radio was not moved up into a money position by the ruling. This finish also brought another use for the camera to decide the place and that part of the purse went to Merry Maker, with Danger Point third. Then, of course, came the disqualification. TOP RADIO UNLUCKY. Mahdi was the one to set the pace and in the early stages he drew away four lengths with" Eli Yale and Your Honor following and Top Radio fourth, while Merry Maker was. slower to be under way. When the stretch was reached Mahdi was tiring and Your Honor swung to the outside to run him down. At the same time Merry Maker attempted to follow him. but bore over badly to knock Top Radio out of the running. Danger Point finished going well while Eli Yale quit badly. After the finish Merry Maker was worked out the full mile in preparation for an engagement Saturday and completed the distance in 1:40?5., Robert L. Gerrys Flickering was winner of the opening five and one-half furlongs dash, for maiden juvenile fillies of a cheap variety, and William Elders Off and On took the place by a comfortable margin, while W. R. Coes Old Maid and A. T. Alleys Night Watch fought it out so closely for third that a photograph was required by the judges. After the usual delay the print was furnished showing the finish in this order. There was considerable delay in this race when Eye was unseated from Octave on the way- to the post and F. Kopel was substituted. Then the unruly actions of Night Watch and Odd Girl caused further delay, and Night Watch was finally taken outside the stalls. Another photographic decision was necessary in the six furlongs of the second race when M. Marmorsteins Aroused and Dewey Benthams Flopsie crossed the line on the same stride. The photograph declared Aroused the winner. A length and one-half Tu0 ot these third went to Drawn Sword, .favo"te- and 33 the race was run he was slightly best. He had been seriously shut off by Flopsie in the stretch and Kastner. who rode that filly, was called in the stand, but his explanation-satisfied the stewards and there was no disqualification. ODOMS SECOND WINNER. George Odom sent out his second winner of the day and Seabo had his second winning mount in the fifth, at a mile and seventy yards, for cheap maidens, when Mrs. W Plunkett Stewarts Separator tarried all the pace to be winner over Mrs; E. D. Jacobs Identical and third went to Count Up with Money Muddle fourth. Stolen Kiss and Fa-leen went after the son of Milkman in the early racmg, but he held them safe at all times and was under restraint. At the head of the stretch Seabo shook up his mount nd M?,mpeLaWa? to come hone winner by three lengths. Identical had moved into contention leaving the backstretch and made a brave effort to ran the winner down, to beat Count Up a length for the place. The son of Reigh Count had closed some ground for his share in the purse. In a driving finish Mrs. N. E. Doyles Sang Froid was a lucky winner of the mile and a sixteenth event, at the end of the card. It was lucky for the reason that Pastry, winner of his last four previous races, met with much interference and finished at the heels of the winner, beating Master Lad a head for the place. Right at the break, Pastry was badly pinched off and then in the stretch he was blocked in an attempt to come through on the inside. Gallant Miss made the pace under a steadying: restraint almost to the stretch turn where she weakenea suddenly and Sang Froid went into ."Jl"" mand and Master Lad moved up menacingly I At this time. Pastry was making an effectual effort to come through on thejnside it6 lose By reason andf Ms misfortune.
