f EPSOM DOWNS TURF NOTES f S : 4 R. F. Coppage, owner of Mae and Young Bill, which are being campaigned at Epsom Downs by ex-jockey Ray Holloway, who also has a division of the J. C. Ellis string, came in from Evansville, Ind., for a visit. He will remain here for the balance of the meeting. Jockey Sidney Erwin was the recipient or many congratulations from his fellow jockeys when informed that he became the father of an eight-pound boy in Dallas. Both mother and baby are doing nicely, according to word received here. The contest for trainers honors at Epsom is close, with J. G. Brown holding a slight lead over Benny Creech and George Keeton. The Texan has a total of seven winners, while Creech has saddled six thus far and George Keeton five. The winner of the contest will be awarded a split-second watch. Apprentice K. Mastin, a maiden jockey who is under contract to J. H. Taylor, trainer of the Hiawatha Stable, had his initial mount of the meeting in the first race Friday when he rode Grazing. Frank C. Seremba is making preparations to ship the Joseph Cattarinich, Mrs. Sally Stengel and his own thoroughbreds to Arlington Downs the early part of next week. Seremba has sent four winners to the post during the current Epsom Downs meeting. According to G. F. "Goldy" Mitchell, agent for the Mrs. A. M. Creech stable, the sprinter Ima Count developed soreness after his race Thursday and will be inactive for the remainder of the Houston meeting. W. J. Root, New Orleans boy, will attempt, a comeback in the saddle after an absence of two years. However, during that period he has kept in condition exercising horses and informed the Epsom Downs stewards that he can scale as low .as 110 pounds. Several trainers have reported the receipt of telegrams from Pat Horgan, Narragan-sett racing secretary, who is seeking thoroughbreds for the final of the three meetings at the Rhode Island track. Otto C. Rasch, Jr., trainer for the Bedford Stock Farm, has completed arrangements for the shipment of his charges to Arlington Downs Friday night. The promising filly, Royal Countess, headed the shipment of the racers to that point. Jockey Harold West left by motor Friday morning for Arlington Downs, where he will ride during the forthcoming meeting, which is scheduled Xo get under way October 22 for a run of thirty-three days.
