THANKERTON NOT ELIGIBLE TO RACE IN THIS COUNTRY i NEW YORK, N. Y., Oct. 16. While the invasion of foreign horses Is always welcomed in this country and the appearance of such a good English three-year-old as Thankerton, which finished third in the classic Two Thousand Guineas and Derby this season, would give much added interest to our racing, someone erred or is not properly acquainted with the American rules of racing in even suggesting that the three-year-did son of the 1925 Two Thousand Guineas and Derby winner, Manna, and Verdict, be sent here for racing. The colt is not eligible for the General Stud Book, and thus is ineligible to race here, except under the National Steeplechase and Hunt Rules. According to reports from England, Mrs. James Shand, owner, and Gerald Armstrong, trainer of Thankerton, intend to nominate and point the invader for the 00,000 Santa Anita Handicap, to be run in California next February. In this or any other flat race he is not qualified to start. Thankerton Is a so-called half-bred because of the May Day strain In his pedigree. He inherits his illegitimate blood from his dam. Verdict,, a daughter of Shogun, a direct descendant from the May Day family. Shogun and his daughter. Verdict, were top class race horses, and both produced racers of merit in addition to Thankerton. Verdict is also the dam of Quashed, winner of the Oaks Stakes, Ascot Gold Cup and other stakes of a value of more than 00,000 in England. The May Day family, which has produced many celebrated racers, is an old English-Irish breeding strain that has long been famed from the exclusive English Stud Book. While their so-called half-breds are banned from the Stud Book they are eligible to race under Jockey Club rules of racing in England, Ireland and other foreign countries but not under Jockey Club rules of racing in the United States.
